WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Justice League Dark #29 by Andy Lanning, Ron Marz, Amancay Nahuelpan, June Chung, Rob Leigh, Marco Santucci, Arif Prianto, and ALW's Troy Peteri, on sale now.

In the "Endless Winter" crossover, the situation is worsening by the minute. The Frost King has covered the entire world in a blizzard, and his ice monsters are attacking people on every continent. The Justice League can barely keep up, and it's made all the more hopeless by the fact that they have no idea where the ancient supervillain is. Luckily, the superheroes get some crucial information from Hippolyta, who tells the Flash, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the Justice League Dark about the Frost King's first attack back in the 10th century.

After she reveals her own team's efforts to stop the villain, it's determined that the world sorely needs help from Swamp Thing but, unfortunately, the elemental creature is still trapped in the Other Place. Thankfully, "Endless Winter" turns the tide by debuting a new Swamp Thing, one who may actually defeat the Frost King.

While an ancient Swamp Thing battled the Frost King alongside Hippolyta, Black Adam, and Viking Prince in the past as part of the Justice League Viking, the world currently finds itself without a Swamp Thing. That is because, in previous issues of Justice League Dark, the elemental creature sacrificed itself and remained in the Other Place, another dimension home to all dark magic. But since the Justice League is in dire need of the Swamp Thing's help, Wonder Woman and Zatanna both head back to this dark dimension, in the hopes of finding the elemental creature alive and willing to help.

When Diana and Zatanna get to the Other Place, they discover that it is now flourishing with life thanks to Swamp Thing who is indeed alive. However, while the creature is willing to help in the fight against the Frost King, it cannot leave this place or it will become a corrupted source of dark magic once again. Instead, Swamp Thing gives the two of them a small piece of itself, a root that can serve as a vessel, albeit an empty one. All they would need is a host.

The two superheroes take this root back to the Oblivion Bar, where they find that Hippolyta and the rest of the Justice League Dark have summoned the spirit of the Viking Prince. Long ago, the Prince fought alongside the Queen of the Amazons, and he sacrificed himself to stop the Frost King the first time around. Now, the villain is back, and the spirit of the Prince is willing to help -- he just has no idea how, since he is essentially a ghost. Thankfully, that is exactly what Wonder Woman and Zatanna need. The Swamp Thing root grows and covers the Viking Prince, using his spirit as a host. The two then merge to create a new, Viking Swamp Thing.

This new Swamp Thing has the size and looks of the elemental creature, but with the added features of the Viking Prince's armor. Armed with an axe as well as the magical properties of the Green, this new Swamp Thing just may prove to be the cavalry the Justice League needs to defeat the Frost King.

Since the original Swamp Thing is currently stuck in the Other Place for now, it's unclear if this Viking Swamp Thing is meant to take its place for the foreseeable future. The return of the Viking Prince was a notable dive into the past of the DC Universe, and his new role is surprising and inspired. It would be great to have him stick around as a member of the Justice League Dark once the snow settles but for that to happen, he and the rest of the superheroes will have to put a stop to the "Endless Winter" first.
