Justice League ‘An Interesting Product of Two Directors,’ Affleck Says

When Justice League arrives in November, the ensemble film will not only feature combined forces onscreen, but behind the camera as well. Zack Snyder helmed the project until leaving in May following a family tragedy, at which point Warner Bros. brought in Avengers director Joss Whedon to steer the production through reshoots.

Speaking with Entertainment WeeklyJustice League executive producer and star Ben Affleck detailed what it was like to work with both filmmakers, and how their combined efforts culminated in an “unorthodox” yet fully functioning final product.

“It’s a little bit unorthodox,” said Affleck, who reprises his role as the Dark Knight from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. “Zack had a family tragedy, and stepped off, which was horrible. For the movie, the best person we could’ve possibly found was Joss. We got really lucky that he stepped in.” He added that he felt the result was “an interesting product of two directors, both with kind of unique visions, both with really strong takes. I’ve never had that experience before making a movie. I have to say, I really love working with Zack, and I really love the stuff we’ve done with Joss.”

As is often the case with major Hollywood productions, the extent of Whedon’s reshoots for Justice League has been of interest to fans and industry observers, with reports surfacing last month that additional photography would cost upward of $25 million, as opposed to the $6 million to $10 million more typical of big-budget films. Doing his part to downplay concerns, Affleck said, “I’ve never worked on a movie that didn’t do reshoots. Argo, we did reshoots for a week and a half! Four days on Gone Baby Gone!”

Doubling down on his comments made during Comic-Con International that he’ll remain in the role of Batman following the release of Justice League, despite reports to the contrary, Affleck declared, “This is a really nice time to work in DC. They’re hitting their stride. They’re getting it right. It’s starting to feel like it’s really working.”

Arriving Nov. 17, Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta and J. K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon.
