Director Zack Snyder recently revealed why he chose to incorporate Superman's black suit into his cut of Justice League, debuting on HBO Max in March 2021.

"I really was always a very strong advocate for the black suit," Snyder told ComicBook Debate. "I really wanted the black suit; it made sense for me because... Superman is a character notoriously who does not grow. He is like a rock and everything just smashes against him."

He added, "And we learn about ourselves by trying to change a thing that's unchangeable."

The director described that as "the old way, the old Superman." He explained that his "Superman had to, at every step, sort of level up and learn something, and be something different... What I had planned was that the final step for Superman, [was] his real return, or his real coming into what I would consider the classic Superman."

"We don't really get it in this movie, the classic Superman. I also feel like the black suit is a great time delineator," Snyder continued. "If you see a flashback or a flash-forward, him in the black suit lets you know where you are in time because it's very particular to this certain arc."

Superman's black suit costume made its debut in 1993's Reign of the Supermen! It was designed by then Superman: The Man of Steel artist Jon Bogdanove, and first appeared in Action Comics #689, featuring art by Jackson "Butch" Guice.

The synopsis for Snyder's cut of the Justice League reads,

In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Zack Snyder's Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K.
