Zack Snyder's cut of 2017's Justice League is set to put forth a whole new vision of the film more in line with what the director had originally intended prior to having to step away from the project. During DC's FanDome event, an official trailer for the project was released, which includes a lot of things that were left on the cutting room floor the first time around. However, among those debuting in the trailer was DeSaad, a key figure in Darkseid's story.

Here's what you need to know about DeSaad.

Who is DeSaad?

Desaad With Defeated Power Girl And Huntress Behind Him

Created by Jack Kirby in 1971's Forever People #2, DeSaad is a Darkseid's master torturer and right-hand man. His name is a reference to French author Marquis De Sade, whose name the term sadism derived from. When Darkseid first encountered Desaad on New Genesis, the villain manipulated the youth into killing his pet bird and cat in a fit of rage. After that encounter, the young Desaad left for Apokolips and eventually joined Darkseid's inner circle.

In terms of his powers, DeSaad has the same enhanced physiology as many of the New Gods. He is functionally immortal and can live for thousands upon thousands of years assuming that he doesn't die in battle. DeSaad also has a high level of invulnerability and possesses super strength. Perhaps what DeSaad is most well-known for, though, are his brutal torture tactics, which often include psychological manipulation through telepathy. In addition to those abilities, DeSaad can cast illusions, changing his appearance at will, while also absorbing and manipulating various forms of energy, including that from a particle accelerator in the comics.

While DeSaad is powerful, he is, like many New Gods, vulnerable to Radion, which is generally deployed against them through bombs and blasters. In addition, while his intellect and abilities do give him an advantage against many DC characters, he has been outsmarted at least once by Batman.

What DeSaad Means For The DCEU

The DCEU Justice League

While DeSaad did not initially appear in the theatrically released Justice League, actor Peter Guinness did film scenes for the film that weren't used. Those seem to be what is restored here, and the addition of DeSaad and the greater presence of Darkseid and the New Gods teases Snyder's larger plans for a Justice League trilogy. While there's no good indication those plans will come to fruition, the addition of DeSaad teases just what might have been.

Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. Zack Snyder's Justice League will premiere exclusively on HBO Max in 2021.
