Long considered "a pipe dream," Zack Snyder's Justice League is the director's cut of 2017's Justice League. Although Snyder is credited as the director of that incarnation, he stepped down during post-production due to the death of his daughter Autumn and was replaced by Joss Whedon. This led to extensive reshoots that drastically altered Snyder's intended vision, resulting in what many called a Frankenstein-esque film that attempted to mesh Whedon's lighthearted and humorous style with Snyder's darker, more serious aesthetic and tone.

"The decision to leave was 100 percent mine," Snyder said when asked if he stepped down from Justice League on his own. "I knew the fight that I was in for with them. And my family needed me, and I needed them. I was in a struggle at home, and then to go to my place of work and be in a second struggle there seemed like an outrageous thing to do to myself and my loved ones."

After nearly four years, Zack Snyder's Justice League finally saw the light of day in March 2021, courtesy of HBO Max. While the four-hour epic includes a number of scenes from the theatrical cut, there's far more character development for characters like Ray Fisher's Victor Stone/Cyborg, as well as the added threat of Darkseid. The movie also includes an epilogue that teases what would've been part of Snyder's grander DC Extended Universe plans with Justice League 2 and 3, though WarnerMedia has made it clear that there are no plans to continue with Snyder's vision.

"It was cool to do the Snyder Cut of Justice League and that was fun and everything," Snyder said in May. "But Warner Bros. still tortured me the whole time for whatever reason, they can’t help it. I don’t know why I’m such a fucking pain in their ass because I’m not trying to be, honestly."
