Justice League’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Dropping Lower & Lower

A day after officially debuting on Rotten Tomatoes with an aggregate score of 43 percent, Warner Bros.’ Justice League has seen its rating drop even further. As of this writing, the film stands at 37 percent on the Tomatometer, well below the 92 percent the DC Extended Universe’s previous release, Wonder Woman, scored.

When the movie’s initial rating leaked ahead of time via the social app Flixter, it had a disappointing but perhaps not lethal 48 percent Tomatometer rating. The 5 percent drop from that to the 43 percent it had when Rotten Tomatoes officially announced its rating was certainly not the development Warner Bros. executives were hoping for, and the further drop overnight does not bode well for the film’s ultimate rating.

At this point, the big-budget ensemble is lagging behind Man of Steel (55 percent), but remains ahead of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (27 percent) and Suicide Squad (26 percent).

None of this is likely to have much effect on the movie’s opening weekend box office, however. Director Zack Snyder’s Justice League is on track to rack up an impressive $325 million and $355 million at the worldwide box office over the next few days. Domestically, estimates put the movie’s opening weekend somewhere around $110 million to $120 million, which would put Justice League‘s opening weekend slightly in front of Wonder Woman‘s ($103.3 million), but well behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s ($166 million). Whether the poor reviews have an effect on the film’s overall performance, or if the excitement over watching DC Comics’ biggest heroes team up on the big screen for the first time will overcome poor critical reaction, remains to be seen.

In a bit of a bright spot, Rotten Tomatoes audience score is far outpacing the critics’ reactions. At this point, the film has a solid 86 percent “liked it” rating, based over 86,000 fan reactions, indicating that audiences are having a different reaction to the movie than film critics.

In theaters now, Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon.
