The Justice League is not only the premier super-team of the DC Universe but also one of the most important in all comics. Consisting of the greatest heroes battling the biggest threats, the Justice League has saved creation numerous times through a combination of power, skill, and sheer determination. Just about every major hero in the DC Universe has been a member of the team, making it one of the deepest rosters around.

Not every member has gotten along with the others but they've always managed to save the day. However, there are some members of the team who, for any number of reasons, simply don't need to be in the group.

10 Zatanna

DC Comics Zatanna

Zatanna has found herself a part of both the regular Justice League and the magic-oriented Justice League Dark but it's a huge stretch to say that she needed to be with either team. Zatanna's magic makes her one of the most formidable heroes in the DC Universe and her years of experience have made her ready to take on just about anything.

Zatanna has spent most of her superheroic career on her own anyway, so her time in the Justice League is almost a blip on the radar for her. While she's always shown a willingness to team up with her fellow heroes, it's never been mandatory for her, as her powers allow her to take on all comers.

9 Hawkman

Hawkman From DC

Hawkman has been reincarnating through time and space for millennia and has picked up a lot of knowledge and skills. One of the fiercest fighters to ever join the Justice League, Hawkman is a danger to just about any foe he comes up against. With his years of experience, skill, and sheer tenacity, there's no doubt that Hawkman doesn't need the Justice League.

Hawkman had been fighting evil for years before ever joining the team and has survived things that other members never would be able to. There are more items on his list of achievements than anyone would care to count, but they all add up to one thing -- Hawkman would do fine without the Justice League.

8 Green Arrow

Green-Arrow-Winick-Run

At first glance, it seems like Green Arrow would definitely need the Justice League -- he's just a regular guy with a bow and arrow. However, nothing could be farther from the truth. Green Arrow is one of the toughest heroes without powers around but more importantly, he's quite smart. One of the things he's learned over the years is to stay in his lane.

Green Arrow isn't going to go after some universe conquering titan on his own. He's perfectly capable of fighting crime all by himself in Star City and would gladly leave the big stuff to the heroes who could handle it. He mostly just likes the camaraderie of the League and proving just how good he is but he doesn't need to be a member of the team.

7 John Stewart

john stewart big guns green lantern

None of the Green Lanterns who have been members of the Justice League really need to be with the team but the one who needs it the least is John Stewart. Sure, John's never had his own solo book but he's proven over the years to be one of the most capable heroes in the DC Universe, the perfect blend of powers, smarts, and skill.

There are many who would argue that Stewart is the best Lantern of them all and there's a lot to that. His experience as a Marine Corps sniper has given him a great combat background to draw on and his time as an architect means that his constructs are as meticulously thought out as they are powerful. With skills like these, the League needs him more than he needs it.

6 Wonder Woman

DC Wonder Woman 14 Cropped

Wonder Woman has long been one of the premier superheroes in the DC Universe and an integral part of the Justice League. One of the strongest female superheroes of all time, Wonder Woman is also an amazing hand to hand combatant and a shrewd strategist as well. While she's definitely been a boon to the team, she doesn't really need to be there.

On her own, Wonder Woman has been known to outfight gods and defeat some of the most powerful legendary monsters on the planet. She's smart enough to figure out a way around any threat and has the muscle to get the job done on her own.

5 Swamp Thing

A bereft Swamp Thing in DC Comics

While he hasn't been a part of the main team, Swamp Thing has been a part of the Justice League Dark and shown just how useful he could be in a team environment. However, when it comes right down to it, he doesn't need to be on the team; he's powerful enough to take on most threats on his own. On top of that, his greatest accomplishments have been without a team around him.

In the years preceding his time in the Justice League, Swamp Thing got up to some amazing things, more than proving that he could handle just about anything on his own. While his time with the JLD is a great help to the team, they need him more than he needs them.

4 Animal Man

Animal Man With A Snake, Owl, Parrot, And Giraffe

Animal Man has spent a little time on different Justice League teams but has honestly never been a great fit for any of them. There are a number of reasons for this but for whatever reason, Animal Man just works way better on his own. His powers give him a ton of options in combat and he's proven more than capable of taking down bad guys all on his own.

There's a reason why when most people think of Animal Man, they don't really think of his times with the Justice League. Animal Man just works better on his own and in a team environment kind of fades into the background.

3 Martian Manhunter

Martian Manhunter JLA

Martian Manhunter has been defined by his time with the Justice League but that doesn't mean he needs the team. Martian Manhunter has more powers at his disposal than most teams have and has all the skill and experience of someone who has been fighting evil at the highest levels for years. On his own, Martian Manhunter is a force to be reckoned with.

There are very few villains out there who can handle Martian Manhunter one on one; in fact, there are very few teams of villains that can do so. While he does great things with the Justice League, any member of the team will say the thing about Martian Manhunter -- the League needs him more than he needs the League.

2 Superman

Superman Endless Winter

If there's any hero out there who has proven they don't need the Justice League, it's Superman. Superman saves the Earth on a daily basis and is one of the greatest forces of good throughout the DC Universe. While his powers bolster the League and he's proven to be a difference-maker in many of their battles, he doesn't really need the League to take down most of what they encounter.

The League is a big help to Superman but he would be just as great a hero without them as he is as a member. Superman leaving the League would be a blow to them but he would still be out there saving the day on a daily basis without them.

1 Batman

DC Batman Rushes To Rescue

Batman has long served as the brains of the Justice League and while he's often not a great asset in a fight, he's proven over the years that even on his own, he's a threat to just about any villain out there. Batman has spent years proving just how good he is and has amassed enough resources and equipment to out a fight against anyone, even all by himself.

Batman has been fighting crime on his own for a long time and his time in the Justice League has often gotten in the way of that. While it's helpful to have them for back-up when something particularly ugly rears its head, Batman has enough going for him that he doesn't really need their help very much.
