The DC Universe has an array of amazing superhero teams, from the Teen Titans to the Outsiders to the Legion of Super-Heroes, but no team is as iconic as the Justice League. The home of the greatest heroes of the DC Universe, the Justice League first came together to defeat Starro the Conqueror and has saved the world - and the universe - countless times since.

Sometimes the Justice League's ranks are filled with heavy hitters like Flash and Captain Atom, and other times the roster has been less than stellar. Still, no matter who is on the team, the Justice League is always there to save the day, it just may take longer depending on who's around.

10 Most Important: Superman

Superman

Making his debut in 1938, Superman changed the face of comics and brought about the age of superheroes. In the history of the DC Universe, Superman isn't the first superhero, but he is the greatest one. His power isn't just having all the great abilities, it's his skills as a leader. Both compassionate and strong, Superman has led the Justice League a number of times but has never used his power to force others to do what he wants. He is a leader not only to the League but to every hero in the DC Universe.

9 Least Important: Blue Beetle

Ted Kord the Second Blue Beetle from DC Comics ready to fight.

While his teammates loved him, when Blue Beetle was a member of the Justice League International, he was never much help in a fight. Most of the time, Blue Beetle would stay in his ship, the Bug, and act as the communicator for the team while everyone else fought off whatever threat they were facing.

During his time as a member of the League, Blue Beetle turned the League's private island into a casino resort and gained so much weight he couldn't fit into his costume anymore. The one time Blue Beetle really took part in a fight, he was nearly killed by Doomsday. Blue Beetle's jokes were top-notch, but his heroics were lackluster.

8 Most Important: Batman

The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight of Gotham City, Batman stands out as the one human without superpowers who can hold his own alongside heroes like Green Lantern, Superman, and Wonder Woman. Batman is a strategic genius who usually comes up with a plan that saves the day, and his technical knowledge is second to none. As billionaire Bruce Wayne, Batman has funded many iterations of the Justice League over the years, from their satellite base to the ships they use to travel deep into the galaxy. Without Batman, the Justice League could quickly fall apart.

7 Least Important: Gypsy

Justice League: The 10 Most Embarrassing Members (And The 10 Best)

A member of the Justice League during the Detroit years, Gypsy's illusionary powers can be useful in a battle, and she is also a skilled martial artist trained by Bronze Tiger. While she was a valued asset to the team during her time as a member, Gypsy never did anything that would make her stand out in the history of the Justice League. Even her fellow Justice League Detroit teammate Vibe was able to make League history by being the first member of the League to die on the job.

6 Most Important: Wonder Woman

wonder woman

The Justice League is best known for the fact that it hold within its ranks DC's "Big Seven", but it is the trinity that really makes the Justice League stand out. While Superman leads the team and Batman is the strategist, it is Wonder Woman who has held different versions of the team together over the years. Coming from the hidden island Themyscira to bring messages of love and peace, Wonder Woman is one of the most powerful members of the League, and while she has only led the team for short periods of time, she is the person the other leaders turn to for advice.

5 Least Important: Animal Man

Animal-Man flies in the sky, surrounded by birds in DC Comics

Given the power to borrow the abilities of animals nearby by aliens, Animal Man has had a long and strange career as a hero. One of the few characters to learn that he is actually a comic book character, Animal Man's life has been torn apart and put back together a number of times. Over the years, Animal Man has been a member of Justice League Europe and Justice League Dark, but he did not stay with either team for long, choosing to spend more time with his family rather than playing superhero.

4 Most Important: Martian Manhunter

Martian Manhunter

A founding member of the Justice League, Martian Manhunter has been a part of almost every version of the team that has ever existed. The last of his race, Martian Manhunter has found a family with the Justice League, making him the heart of the team. During the years that the League was a UN-sanctioned team, Martian Manhunter served as the leader of Justice League America. When the Justice League first disbanded, it was Martian Manhunter - along with Aquaman - who rebuilt the team. Every member of the League sees the Martian Manhunter as the torchbearer of the League's history.

3 Least Important: Crimson Fox

Crimson Fox

A member of Justice League Europe, everyone believed that Crimson Fox was one person, but in truth the hero was Constance and Vivian D'Aramis, twins who would trade off wearing the costume. Constance faked her death so that the sisters could work as superheroes and keep their family's perfume business running. While the sisters both had enhanced agility and pheromone powers, and the suit had razor-sharp claws, Crimson Fox was useful in a fight, but never stood out during her time as a League member. Both sisters would later die in separate battles.

2 Most Important: Zatanna

Zatanna in the comics

In the controversial event series Identity Crisis by Brad Meltzer and Rags Morales, Zatanna became one of the most important members of the Justice League, although likely not in a way she would have wanted. When the evil Doctor Light got onto the Justice League satellite headquarters, he sexually assaulted Sue Dibny, the wife of Elongated Man. When the League captured Doctor Light, it was decided that Zatanna would use her magic to wipe the villain's mind.

When Batman learned what the team did, Zatanna erased the knowledge from his mind as well. Zatanna used her mind-wiping spell on a number of villains over the years, most notably the Secret Society of Super-Villains when they learned the secret identities of a number of Justice League members. Her actions, approved by her teammates, put a dark secret at the heart of the Justice League.

1 Least Important: Blue Jay

6 Blue Jay

Originally a member of the Champions of Angor, Blue Jay traveled from his Earth to the Justice League's Earth with his teammates after their Earth was destroyed in a nuclear war. Blue Jay joined the Justice League Europe, but he never felt comfortable as a member of the team. Over time, Blue Jay's teammates from the Champions of Angor die in battles, leaving him as the last survivor of his Earth. After the Justice League lost it's UN backing, Blue Jay left the team. Years later, he would be at Sanctuary - the place heroes would go to deal with PTSD, when Wally West would lose control of his powers. Blue Jay was one of the heroes to die in Tom King and Clay Mann's Heroes in Crisis.
