Following the release of the Zack Snyder's Justice League trailer, Jared Leto has leaned into the "We live in a society" meme that has been making the rounds -- yet again -- on social media. The trailer revealed that Leto will be reprising his role as the Joker in Snyder's cut of Justice League. Replying to the trailer on Twitter, Leto noted, "We live in a society," not only quoting the Joker's line from the trailer but directly referencing a meme often attributed to the character.RELATED: Zack Snyder's Justice League Debuts Jared Leto's Tattoo-Free Joker

While the Joker's exact words from the trailer are, "We live in a society where honor is a distant memory," the phrase "we live in a society" has been attributed to the Joker since 2015, though it is not something the Joker has ever said. Often linked to "nice guy," edgelord culture, the meme first began with an image of Heath Ledger's Joker. Fans even issued a petition to have Joaquin Phoenix's version say the words in the 2019 Joker film.

While "We live in the society" has been a Joker-related meme for years, the origins of the phrase can be traced back to George Costanza on the 1991 episode of Seinfeld, "The Chinese Restaurant," where George has a meltdown while waiting for the payphone. "You know, we are living in a society!" he says. "We're supposed to act civilized!"

Zack Snyder's Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Ray Porter as Darkseid, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K.
