WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Justice League Infinity #3 on sale now from DC Comics.

Wonder Woman and Darkseid are often lumped together due to the nature of their powers. Diana is the representative of the old gods, beings like Zeus, Hera, and Ares, whereas Darkseid is the first among the New Gods, younger deities that have come to replace the old. But in the DCAU, Darkseid and Wonder Woman have rarely had the opportunity to interact with one another beyond a few scrapes here and there. In fact, Darkseid's main adversary has always been Superman. This is why it comes as such a shock to see him address Wonder Woman by her given name in Justice League Infinity #3 by JM Dematteis, James Tucker, Ethen Beavers, Nick Filardi and Tom Napolitano. Even more so considering the last time he was seen, Darkseid vanished in a flash of light.

A strange cosmic event has been displacing people all across the multiverse, including Wonder Woman. But the barren world she ended up on was not as uninhabited as she initially believed. While finding shelter in a cave, she ran into Darkseid, who greeted her with something akin to pleasant surprise. This is a significant shift from when she had last seen Darkseid, assuming of course that this is even the same Darkseid.

He had previously invaded the Earth with an army of parademons and armed with Brainiac technology. But despite the onslaught he threw at the Justice League, they managed to prevail in the end -- with a little help.

It was Lex Luthor who truly defeated Darkseid when he was at his most powerful. Recognizing that Darkseid was hellbent on getting his revenge, Luthor reasoned that the only way to defeat him would be to offer him something he wanted even more than Superman's heart on a pike: the Anti-Life Equation. Despite the odds being stacked against him, Luthor managed to acquire the one thing Darkseid wanted more than anything else in existence before offering it to the dark god. The two then vanished in a flash of light, seemingly destroyed.

But things are not always what they seem in the DCU. Everyone agreed that Darkseid would return someday, but none of them anticipated it to be so soon. Without his influence to stabilize Apokolips, the planet once again devolved into civil war as his former courtiers duked it out for the throne. But now it seems that their lord and master has returned -- just not in the same universe.

The question that still needs to be answered is whether or not this is their Darkseid. It has yet to be confirmed what the Anti-Life Equation did to him. It could very well have teleported him to an entirely new universe and left him stranded there with no hope of returning. But the way he greeted Wonder Woman doesn't exactly support this.

He acted as if he bumped into an old friend or just anyone in general. Considering the multiversal shenanigans going on at the moment, it's possible that this Darkseid Wonder Woman encountered is native to the universe she found herself in. Perhaps this was a Darkseid who managed to wipe out all life in the universe, but was left alone. It would certainly explain why he seems pleased to see her. But either way, Wonder Woman will have her own reservations about stumbling across the Lord of Apokolips on a lifeless world.
