Though there were elements of a CGI character, portrayed via motion-capture by actor Ray Porter, intended for use in the 2017 film, Darkseid was ultimately cut from Justice League. However, in the years that followed, Snyder took to social media to tease his plans to restore the character in his cut of the film, at one point posting a photo of a young Darkseid using the Anti-Life Equation to wreak havoc on an unknown world.

Shortly after Zack Snyder's Justice League was officially confirmed to stream on HBO Max in 2021, Snyder released an clip from his cut that showed Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman discovering an ancient tapestry depicting Darkseid. The character was also featured in the official trailer for Zack Snyder's Justice League, along with a brief shot of DeSaad (Peter Guinness), another New God and Darkseid's loyal master torturer.

Though Darkseid and DeSaad were both left out of Justice League's theatrical cut, Darkseid's servant Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) did appear as the film's main antagonist. He is expected to once again serve as the primary villain in Snyder's Justice League cut, but will boast a new design that makes him seem less humanoid and closer to the spikier, more monstrous Steppenwolf Snyder had originally envisioned for the project.

In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Zack Snyder's Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. The four-part miniseries premieres on HBO Max in March.
