WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.

Justice League Dark: Apokolips War definitely lives up to the "Dark" part of its name. Many heroes are brutally murdered or transformed into killing machines during Darkseid's invasion of Earth. According to writer Mairghread Scott, one hero, in particular, provided the most heartbreaking moments in the film.

Speaking to CBR in an interview, Scott admitted that she felt extremely guilty about putting Superman through the wringer. "It was really hard to put so much on Clark's shoulders, so much failure, and he struggles with it and overcomes and that's nice but it's really hard to be mean to Clark Kent even when your job is to be professionally mean to Clark Kent; you feel bad."

During the opening battle of Apokolips War, Darkseid injects Superman with liquid Kryptonite, slowly poisoning him and stripping him of his powers. To make matters worse, mankind blames Clark Kent for the Apokolips incursion and his wife Lois ends up sacrificing herself later on in the film. Out of all the heroes, Superman does seem to suffer the most. Yet in spite of his loss, he soldiers on, uniting with others to liberate Earth.
