Recently, Warner Brothers announced that visionary director J.J. Abrams would be producing a Justice League Dark series for the upcoming HBO Max streaming service. At the moment, little else is known about the series other than the fact that it is coming. Regardless, DC fans are still excited to see their favorite characters come to life for what is likely to be the first time for some.

However, despite being a relatively new team within the comics (unless you count the unofficial version that was assembled in Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing run), the JLD has already seen quite a few characters rotate in and out of their roster. Looking at some specific factors for certain characters, here is our list of 5 characters we hope to see in the upcoming Justice League Dark series, and 5 who should stay away.

10 Should Stay Away: Batman

Though he isn’t a part of the team in the comics, people still associate Batman with the JLD thanks to things like the animated film. However, though Batman may be a darker comic book character, he has never really fit in well with the mystical elements of the DC universe.

As a man of science and reasoning, Batman would have a lot of catching up to do in relation to other cast members. However, due to the already confusing nature of the character with the upcoming reboot, it is unlikely that audiences will see him in the series in the first place.

9 Hope To See: Deadman

Since his tragic death on the trapeze, Boston Brand has been a fairly powerful spirit within the DC universe. Known now as Deadman, the character roams the Earth looking for the person who sabotaged the line and took his life.

Despite his darker origins, Deadman actually has a sense of humor, which would make him perfect to relieve some of the tension that is sure to be a part of the upcoming series. Though he is nowhere near characters like Deadpool in terms of comic relief, Deadman’s sense of humor would bring an element to the series that few other characters would be able to. Plus, given the mystical nature of his abilities, now is the perfect time for a character like Deadman to step into the spotlight.

8 Should Stay Away: Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman Lasso of Truth

While she may be the current leader of the team in the comics, Wonder Woman isn’t likely to appear on the team for a number of reasons. To start, Gal Gadot is already doing wonders with Diana’s character on the big screen, and the studio wouldn’t want to make things confusing by introducing another version, or forcing a slightly different version of the character.

Likewise, while she may have a firm understanding of the mystic arts, Wonder Woman generally isn’t thought of as a “dark” character. Despite her role within the team in the comics, Wonder Woman should probably stay out of the JLD TV series.

7 Hope To See: Zatanna

Zatanna puts her powers on display

As one of the longest-running members of the JLD in the comics, Zatanna is almost an essential part to the team at this point, and it would be hard to see them doing the series without her. Likewise, as one of the most powerful magicians in the entire DC universe, Zatanna would also bring a lot to the team in terms of firepower.

Furthermore, though her moral compass has been known to sway at times, Zatanna is generally one of the more morally good members on the team. Though she generally doesn’t operate as the leader, she is still an essential part of the team, and it would be a shame for the series to not include her.

6 Should Stay Away: Man-Bat

Like with Wonder Woman, Dr. Kirk Langstrom joined the team as part of the most recent relaunch, and has actually brought a lot of value as the more scientific member of the team. Given that he isn’t always in control over the Man-Bat serum as well, he certainly has a lot of story potential to bring to the series.

However, given the character’s close ties to Gotham and Batman, it is unlikely that he will make an appearance. Even though it would be nice to see the character brought to life for the first time, introducing a character who is often associated with villainy would likely be a bit confusing for general audiences.

5 Hope To See: Constantine

Though he isn’t exactly a team player, Constantine would still make a valuable addition to the upcoming Justice League Dark series. Firstly, the character has already garnered some popularity thanks to Matt Ryan’s well-received portrayal on shows like DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Secondly, an R-rated version of Constantine would certainly be interesting to see, as the character could be much more faithful to his comic book persona. Regardless of whether or not Ryan continues in the role, John Constantine would still bring a bigger name to the series while also creating an interesting team dynamic.

4 Should Stay Away: Shade: The Changing Man

Shade the Changing Man by Mike Allred

After taking a backseat within the universe for years, Shade: The Changing Man actually reappeared as a member of the original JLD lineup. However, the character didn’t last long, and was killed off after only a couple of issues. Because of this, he often isn’t associated with the team to begin with, and is generally more weird than anything else.

While the character is still great in his own ways, he is much more suited for a show like Doom Patrol than Justice League Dark. Though he could still bring some stranger elements to the series overall, it would likely be best if he just kept his distance.

3 Hope To See: Detective Chimp

As one of the weirder members of the JLD, Detective Chimp is also one of the newer members. Joining the team as part of the more recent lineup, Detective Chimp has made for a surprisingly valuable member of the team.

Granted, he is easily one of the smartest characters in the entire DC universe, and he would bring a lot of brainpower and mystery elements, should the series decide to include him. Likewise, given how weird the concept of his character is overall, he would also add a bit of extra flare that the show could make good use of.

2 Should Stay Away: Frankenstein

Frankenstein is actually a fan favorite among many DC Comics fans, and for good reasons. While the character may seem too familiar to some, his portrayal within the DC universe is actually very intriguing, making it easy to see why so many like him.

Despite his small following and his contributions to the JLD within the comics, Frankenstein is likely not popular enough to be featured in a series like Justice League Dark. While it would be nice to see him be included at some point, the character didn’t exactly contribute to the team as much as others have. While he is still a great character, it would be better to have him guest star as an Agent of S.H.A.D.E. rather than a regular member of the JLD.

1 Hope To See: Swamp Thing

After everything that happened with the DC Universe original Swamp Thing series, it would be really nice to see the character back in action. Having already introduced several new and very dark elements, Swamp Thing proved that a show of this caliber can succeed, so long as the finances are kept on track.

While the HBO Max series doesn’t necessarily need to revive the same interpretation of the character, it would be nice if fans got to continue their journey with the character in some form. While it would definitely be nice to see this version once again, the new series can at least learn a thing or two from the character’s solo series.
