WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, available on digital HD now.

In both DC Comics and The CW's Arrowverse line of shows, the character of John Constantine has long been established as being bisexual. However, the new DC Animated Movie Universe film Justice League Dark: Apokolips War adds another layer to the Constantine's sexuality, revealing he was actually once in a relationship with King Shark. According to actor Matt Ryan -- who currently portrays the Constantine in both live-action and animation -- the Hellblazer isn't just bisexual, he's "bi-specieal."

In an exclusive interview with CBR, Ryan opened up about the King Shark revelation, and how it sort of set the internet ablaze. "Yeah, that did kick off yesterday, didn't it?" he said. "What's funny is we all love John Constantine and we love him for being who he is: a working-class, blue-collar street magician with a crass tongue and a sharp wit... and he just might leave you dead. But on the original TV show, we caught a stink from some people about him not being bisexual. But what was interesting was we hadn't gotten that far in the time frame we were given. So who's to say we wouldn't have?"

Ryan continued, "In Legends, then, he's obviously bisexual and, with King Shark, he's obviously 'bi-specieal.' So, Constantine is the most open, liberated person on the planet. I don't know the logistics of how that works but I just guffawed when I was reading it. I was like, 'Oh, that's brilliant!"

While Constantine's earliest comics over at DC/Vertigo only showed his relationships with women, there were hints that he was not exclusively heterosexual. This would be confirmed in 1992's Hellblazer #51, when Constantine mentioned that while he did mostly date women, he had been romantically linked to other men as well. This aspect of Constantine's character would be further explored in subsequent stories, both in comics and on television.

Ryan first stepped up to play the Hellblazer in the 2014 NBC series Constantine. While that show did not acknowledge its eponymous character's bisexuality, as the actor mentions, it wasn't around terribly long -- being canceled after only one season. Ryan's Constantine later made the jump to the Arrowverse, appearing on Arrow and DC's Legends of Tomorrow -- becoming a series regular on the latter during its fourth season. Constantine's past and present relationships -- both with women and with men -- have since been explored under the Arrowverse banner. In addition to the NBC series and the Arrowverse shows, Ryan has voiced the character of Constantine in the animated mini-series Constantine: City of Demons, as well as the animated films Justice League Dark, Constantine: City of Demons - The Movie and, most recently, Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.
