Artist Kevin Maguire unveiled a new take on his iconic cover for 1987's Justice League #1 for the coronavirus (COVID-19) era."This is the closest I would come to doing a political cartoon," Maguire tweeted along with an image of the team practicing social distancing, standing apart from each other on a floor labeled "2020" in large, bright-red letters. All of the heroes are wearing face masks branded with their icons that cover the nose and mouth -- for some of them, in addition to their costume masks.

The classic Justice League #1 cover, frequently imitated and parodied, shows 10 heroes bunched together, glowering at the viewer. Batman, Green Lantern (Guy Gardner), Captain Marvel, Black Canary, Martian Manhunter and Blue Beetle are in both images, joined by Oberon, Mister Miracle, Doctor Fate and Doctor Light (Kimiyo Hoshi) on the original cover. In the 2020 image, Fire, Ice, Booster Gold, Captain Atom and Maxwell Lord round out the team.

This reinvention of the team, with stories by J. Marc DeMatteis, is known as the "bwa-ha-ha" Justice League era because it played the personal dynamics between the characters for laughs rather than angst. It was similar to the 1984-1986 Detroit era in that most of the members were second- and third-tier heroes, but this group had plenty of power.
