An early costume test for Justice League showcases a very different look for Aquaman's Vulko (Willem Dafoe).

"Some very early costume tests that we shot against a painted backdrop and a small piece of set," cinematographer Fabian Wagner wrote on Instagram. The photo has Atlantis' chief counselor donning regal armor that is similar to his fellow Atlantean warriors'. This stands in contrast to his look in Aquaman,  in which he wore lighter armor to highlight his role as a political advisor.

Vulko's Justice League scenes did not make it into the final theatrical cut of the film. Instead, he made his official debut in James Wan's Aquaman. However, his scenes will be reinserted into Zack Snyder's Justice League, which is set to premiere on HBO Max next year.

The announcement of the Snyder Cut ended the two-and-a-half-year movement that pushed for its release. It began when the film first premiered in theaters following reports that Snyder's version of the movie had been heavily altered by Warner Bros. and new director Joss Whedon after Snyder had to step down due to a family tragedy. Many blame those two parties for the film's subpar critical reception and argue that Snyder's product is far superior and fits more coherently with his previous two films in the DCEU canon: Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. Zack Snyder's Justice League will premiere exclusively on HBO Max in 2021.

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman 2 stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The film arrives in theaters Dec. 16, 2022.
