Newly released concept art for Zack Snyder's Justice League showcases Steppenwolf in all his spiky glory.

The artwork was posted to Instagram by Justice League costume concept illustrator Jerad S. Marantz. "It took quite a bit of time to figure out how to do the armor for [Steppenwolf] on [Zack Snyder's Justice League]," he wrote. "I remember doing a lot of experimentation in [ZBrush]. At the end of the day, it was basically a chain brush that I was able to customize. Can’t wait to see it in action!"

Justice League Steppenwolf Armor

Steppenwolf was portrayed by Ciarán Hinds via motion-capture and acted as a servant to his nephew Darkseid in Snyder's original cut of Justice League. However, Joss Whedon's reshoots transformed Steppenwolf into the main antagonist for the film's theatrical cut, dropping all the scenes with Darkseid in the process. Steppenwolf's appearance was also altered to make him seem more human-like, with his armor becoming much smoother than the spiky design Snyder had envisioned.

Zack Snyder's Justice League will restore Steppenwolf's original look, along with the footage of Darkseid and his Apokolipian disciples DeSaad and Granny Goodness. The trailer also teased a sequence that builds on the Knightmare scene from 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, in which Batman/Bruce Wayne has a vision/dream of a post-apocalyptic future where Darkseid and his Parademon army have wreaked havoc on Earth.

In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne aligns forces with Diana Prince with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.

Zack Snyder's Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Ray Porter as Darkseid, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. The film arrives on HBO Max March 18.
