Despite housing the greatest heroes in the DC universe like Superman and Wonder Woman who stand for truth and justice, a team like the Justice League is bound to have secrets. After all, Batman is a core member. Over the years, creators have put their spin on the League's dynamic. Members have come in with different moral philosophies. Aquaman is an authoritarian monarchist working alongside a liberal activist in Green Arrow.

There have also been so many versions of the Justice League, so expect some very flawed efforts to keep a secret. Even the best intentions have led to embarrassment. With the most iconic heroes in the DC Comics universe, it's no surprise that image and ego have come ahead of the truth.

10 The Justice League Forgot About Triumph

Triumph leads the original Justice League

Christopher Priest created Triumph as an inside joke about editor Neal Pozner. He was there in the Silver Age at the founding of the Justice League. On his first mission, Triumph teleported into a dimension outside of time and everyone forgot he existed.

Triumph had a horrible attitude and questionable motivations. Ultimately, the demon Neron, standing in for the devil himself, offered Triumph a deal. Neron would restore Triumph's place in history in exchange for his soul. When Neron returned the missing hero to the timeline, nothing changed, and Triumph realized he did not affect history after all.

Rocket Red 7 betraying the JLI by attacking Martian Manhunter

With Millennium, every title in the publisher's late 1987 catalog revealed that a Manhunter robot or sleeper agent lay in wait. They were close to every hero and team in the DC Comics universe. One of their members was a Manhunter for the brand-new Justice League International. The secret Manhunter was Rocket Red #7.

He took control of their ship and rerouted it to a Middle East oil refinery. After a pitched battle, his fellow Rocket Reds stopped the plan. Rocket Red #7 flew into an oil tank, the fire damaging him. In Justice League International #9 by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, Kevin Maguire, Al Gordon, and Gene D'Angelo, Booster Gold later sealed him in a force field where his weapon turned back on him, destroying the Manhunter.

8 The JLA Knew Each Other's Secret Identities

JLA votes to share secret identities

The Justice League of America was not above keeping secrets, but fans were shocked when they learned that the League didn't even know each other's secret identities. It was unbelievably bizarre that they revealed their faces to stop a specific plot by Doctor Light. His attack went down in Justice League of America #122 by Martin Pasko, Frank McLaughlin, Dick Dillin, and Carl Gafford.

This secret came from Dr. Light learning the identities of several heroes. After defeating the villain, the JLA voted to know every member's real identity. The incident is the spark of one of the JLA's darkest practices: dealing with villains who learn their secrets.

7 Batman Wanted Justice League International Shut Down

Steve Trevor calls the Justice League

When the New 52 launched in 2011, DC Comics published several Justice League titles. One was a resurrection of Justice League International. It starred many of the 80s-era JLI, including Batman. Since he wouldn't share his true identity with the United Nations, he was not an official member.

In Justice League #7, by Geoff Johns, Gene Ha, and Art Lyon, Batman revealed his opinion of the U.N.-backed team. On a video call with Steve Trevor, he demands that the United Nations shut the JLI down as an embarrassment. Batman uses technology to remain hidden the video call. True to his nature, Batman never hinted at his opinion in Justice League International.

6 The JLA's Headquarters Was Known As The "Secret Sanctuary"

Batman unmasks Joker with Justice League

The Justice League of America made its first headquarters in a cave outside the town of Happy Harbor. Even after leaving it, various versions of the Justice League would return to it. They even loaned it to the Doom Patrol and the Legion of Super-Heroes.

In Justice League of America #77 by Denny O'Neil, Dick Dillin, and Joe Giella, Snapper Carr reveals the location of their headquarters. A disguised Joker fools the JLA mascot into betraying the Justice League. With their headquarter's location exposed, the League builds the JLA Satellite in the next issue.

Superman and Wonder Woman had to address the public distrust after the reveal. They assured that the purpose of Sanctuary was noble. Even Batman and Superman used the automated center to work through psychological issues. Unfortunately, the purpose of Sanctuary was its undoing. Wally West was in a lot of pain and lost control of his powers, killing most of the heroes at Sanctuary.

4 Batman Could Get Into The JLA Satellite Any Time He Wanted

Batman takes the Outsiders to the JLA Satellite

Batman left the Justice League of America on bad terms. He formed another team called the Outsiders. One member of Batman's team, Halo, had amnesia that stemmed from her origin. Batman needed equipment that existed in the abandoned JLA Satellite, culminating in Batman and the Outsiders #22 by Mike W. Barr, Alan Davis, and Adrienne Roy.

Batman revealed to his team that he left a back door that allowed him to return to the JLA Satellite anytime. Batman always thought the satellite put too much distance between the League and the people they protect. The secret override was an early sign of the distrust between Batman and the Justice League.

3 Batman Has A Plan To Defeat Every Member Of The League

JLA defeated in Tower of Babel

It shouldn't have surprised anyone that Batman devised ways to defeat each member of the JLA. What no one anticipated was Ra's al Ghul stealing those plans and using them to attack the team. This kept the heroes from interring in the villain's plan to scramble the world's languages. The plan was like the bible story that gave this storyline by Mark Waid, Howard Porter, and Steve Scott its name, Tower of Babel.

The presence of these plans drove a wedge between Batman and the League. Batman had devised the plans after Agamemno swapped the minds of the Justice League with the criminal Injustice League. Batman left the JLA before they could expel him.

2 Justice League International Got United Nations Recognition Through A Staged Rescue

JLI stops an alien satellite

Aided by an evil computer abandoned by Metron, Maxwell Lord manipulated the new Justice League into a position where the United Nations would sanction the team. With recognition in jeopardy, the computer activated a satellite, attacking America's nuclear stockpile. The Justice League went into space to stop it in Justice League International #7 by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, Kevin Maguire, Al Gordon, and Gene D'Angelo.

Although many were suspicious, no one shared the true origin of the attack.

1 The JLA Brainwashed Villains And Heroes

Batman fighting Zatanna in Identity Crisis in DC Comics

Brad Meltzer and Rags Morales's Identity Crisis was deeply controversial, partly due to the revelation that the Justice League brainwashed Doctor Light. When Batman caught them, they brainwashed him as well.

The JLA didn't stop there. Zatanna altered the Martian Manhunter's mind against remembering any stray thoughts he picked up. They also brainwashed Catwoman to sway her from a criminal life. The JLA also made the Secret Society of Super-Villains forget any superhero secret identities they had learned. The scandal altered the Justice League for years and triggered Superboy-Prime's rampage.
