Veteran producer Charles Roven is certainly no stranger to the world of DC Entertainment, having helped guide the productions of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, Zack Synder’s Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman, and now Justice League. It's safe to say that Roven’s contributed significantly to the creation of the cinematic backbone of Warner Bros’ DC Extended Universe, and will continue to have a major hand as it continues in the years ahead.

REVIEW: Superman Mesmerizes, But Uneven Justice League Stumbles

In a quick conversation at the Hollywood premiere of Justice League, Roven offered CBR a glimpse into the tantalizing future of DC’s superheroic landscape, as well as admitting there are a few lingering questions.

CBR: Figuring out how Batman’s world, Superman’s world, Wonder Woman’s world, Flash’s world, etc. lined up together – what was challenging about that?

Charles Roven: We all sat down and we talked about what the long game is on these characters and how they’re going to evolve, if we’re going to have them be in an intersecting universe. It’s really fantastic to see those ideas come to fruition. We all got to see who Superman was in Man of Steel, got a sense of this particular Batman, as opposed to Chris Nolan’s Batman, in Batman Vs. Superman, and obviously they found out who Wonder Woman was in Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman.

Each one of those movies is infused by the DNA of the director that we had, so to bring all of those characters back and yet give us, for the first time, all the Justice League together, that’s pretty exciting. For me personally, whose been a fan of DC since I was a teenager – actually, since I was a preteen – it was really a big honor to be able to have them all together in one movie for the first time.

Obviously, tragic circumstances kept Zack Snyder from completing the film. Do you expect that when the time is right on his end, he’ll be back in some capacity in the DC Extended Universe?

I can only speak for what I know is in the immediate future, and Zack and Debbie [Synder] are producers along with me, and Patty Jenkins and Steen Jones on Wonder Woman 2.

How far along are you all creatively on the next Wonder Woman film? We just got the updated release date – do you have the blueprint for the sequel already locked down?

I would say that we’ve got an early blueprint – and we have a date to make, now!

Wonder Woman really hit the culture again – both the character and Gal Gadot. Tell me what that’s meant to you and how you want to factor that in to the next movie you make.

We really hope that she would be embraced as she was, and the fact that the film just was such a worldwide hit and took over the worldwide zeitgeist. That was also really heartwarming and we have a sense of pride and fulfillment as a result of that. It’s challenging for us to come up with another film and hope that we can continue that.

I think that Patty and Geoff Johns have started down that road, and we’re having a screenplay written now – they’re collaborating; Dave Callaham is also writing. I think that the fans are going to be surprised, and it’s going to be enjoyable and unexpected, I think where we’re headed, but still it’s going to come from character that we’ve established from the beginning.

We’re hearing all sorts of things about this next topic – do you know if Ben Affleck is committed to Matt Reeve’s movie, the next Batman movie, or is that still to be determined?

I’m not producing that movie. Matt Reeves is working on that, but I do work with Ben, so I know that he’s certainly planning on starring in that film, but I don’t know what the script is. I’m not producing that movie so I’m probably the wrong guy to ask.

What’s the most unusual property in the DC toy box that you would love to bring to film? Maybe not a marquis character, but a deeper dive choice?

I wouldn’t necessarily say that I would rather do that character, because we know that there is going to be a Flash movie, we know that Aquaman is being done, I think that Cyborg deserves his own movie too, and I know that the fans are out there screaming for Green Lantern, that’s for sure. But I was always a fan of J’onn J’onzz, Manhunter from Mars.
