Superman's black suit was recently confirmed to exist in the DC Extended Universe thanks to a Justice League deleted scene, but it almost debuted in live-action years ago.

An image posted by Matt Hatton, a concept artist who worked on George Miller's cancelled Justice League movie, on Instagram reveals that Superman almost donned his infamous black suit almost a decade ago. Despite never coming into fruition, the caption for the image reveals that there would have been a casualty after a fight between Superman and Batman -- this time though, it would have been the Dark Knight who perished. Superman can be seen hovering over Bruce Wayne's funeral in the concept art.

Justice League: Mortal was originally targeted for 2009 release, with Armie Hammer as Batman, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, Common as Green Lantern and Adam Brody as The Flash. Warner Bros. abruptly shelved the film in January 2008 due to the writers' strike, concerns about Australian tax incentives and the possibility of an actors' strike. However, in the words of Miller, who had signed on to direct just four months earlier, Justice League: Mortal was simply never meant to be.
