Zack Snyder said one of his ideas for Justice League was a bridge too far for the studio: a romance between Bruce Wayne and Lois Lane.

Speaking to Vanity Fair about the unprecedented move to release a new version of Justice League that follows the director's original plan, Snyder spoke about all the ideas he wanted to bring to life but never got the chance to. One included a mourning Lois Lane falling in love with Bruce Wayne, only for the latter to realize he needed to bring Superman back to life.

"The intention was that Bruce fell in love with Lois and then realized that the only way to save the world was to bring Superman back to life," Snyder said. "So he had this insane conflict, because Lois, of course, was still in love with Superman. We had this beautiful speech where [Bruce] said to Alfred: 'I never had a life outside the cave. I never imagined a world for me beyond this. But this woman makes me think that if I can get this group of gods together, then my job is done. I can quit. I can stop.' And of course, that doesn’t work out for him."

The idea would have been quite an unusual one, not only for comic book fans but also moviegoers who knew Lois was still reeling from the death of Clark Kent in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Ultimately, the studio agreed and refused to let Snyder add in the plot point. And though the new cut of Justice League will include a number of elements not seen in the theatrical release, this sub-plot will not be one of them.

The sweeping story details how in 2016, executives at Warner Bros. became concerned about the tone of the film. DC Entertainment creative chief Geoff Johns and Warner Bros. co-production head Jon Berg were tasked with overseeing the production, as one of them was told to be on set at all times. Snyder likened it to babysitting, and the execs weren't thrilled about micromanaging either. Berg says he tried to stay hands-off, even when the studio had concerns they wanted to be expressed. Snyder, meanwhile, explained that he wasn't too bothered as most of the suggestions were about lightening up the tone of the film.
