Thanks in no small part to Jason Momoa's turn as DC's King of Atlantis in the DC Extended Universe, Aquaman isn't the joke that he used to be, but he still doesn't get the respect he deserves. Even when he's not hanging out with Batman and Wonder Woman in the Justice League, Arthur Curry has a wide range of superpowers, and most of the planet Earth falls under his domain.

While Aquaman has achieved many great feats in his long and storied history, it’s worth noting that none of it would be possible without his sea-worthy anatomy. Now, we're taking a look at some of the lesser-known features of his anatomy that allow him to do a lot more than just breathe underwater and talk to fish.

AQUAMAN'S HEARING

Sound moves differently underwater. Between the constant rocking of the waves, gurgling of motion and of course the muffled noises coming from the ocean's floor, intelligent speech isn't really possible underwater.

That being said, communication isn’t an issue for Aquaman, since he often chooses to communicate telepathically while submerged. Moreover, his Atlantean physiology allows him to hear the faintest of sounds beneath the waves. While it's not clear if his head contains a "melon" -- the special tissue used that whales and dolphins use for echolocation -- his intrinsic sonar abilities likely allow sound to bounce through his ear canals, making them quite the tool for positioning ones' self an underwater environment when the visual range is limited.

AQUAMAN'S EYES

While opening eyes underwater without a pair of goggles doesn't end well for most people, that's not really a problem for Aquaman, whose unique physiology makes looking around underwater effortless.

In addition to being able to withstand the salinity of the ocean with no issue, Arthur Curry has enhanced vision that can scan to 3,600 feet below the ocean’s surface. Additionally, his ability to gaze through the ocean's darkest depths effectively gives him night vision on land, making him visually aware of more of his surroundings than many of his Justice League teammates. In the DCEU, his eyes turned golden when his Atlantean powers kicked in.

AQUAMAN'S STRENGTH

Like many of his Justice League teammates, Aquaman wields a considerable amount of super-strength. Even though he's not quite on Superman's level, he can still lift objects that way over 100 tons, and that ability is only enhanced when he has his trident.

Alongside his brute force, Curry's strength can also propel him through the water at incredible speeds. When he's not hitching a ride with some marine life, Aquaman can swim at about 6800 miles per hour, or March 20. That's enough to make him the fastest swimming being in the entire world.

AQUAMAN'S SKIN

Besides the fact that he’s tolerant of extreme cold and crushing pressures of the ocean's deepest depths, Aquaman is capable of taking hits from the likes of Superman, Wonder Woman and Amazo without flinching too much, which shows that he's as durable as anyone in the DC Universe. In the Marianan Trench, he can operate under 1,086 bars of pressure with no problem.

Additionally, he’s immune to most small arms fire, traditional bladed weapons and even energy blasts. He’s also been shown to have the ability to take heat beams at a level that would destroy city blocks as well.

AQUAMAN'S HAND

In 1994, Aquaman lost his left arm in a fight with the villain Charybdis -- who had it chewed off by mind-controlled piranhas. Aquaman would delve into the throes of depression and an identity crisis, sending him on a journey of having it replaced multiple times over.

Initially, Aquaman replaced with it with a hook, which was accompanied by an aesthetic makeover that saw him grow a beard and go shirtless. Aquaman would travel the world and continue his adventures as best he could, up until he replaced it with a harpoon hand. The harpoon hand was defined by mental controls and could be withdrawn and extended when needed. Eventually, that hand was briefly replaced by a robotic hand before being replaced by a hand made of magical water that was bestowed upon him by the Lady in The Lake of Arthurian legend.

However, this would all come to an end with his death and subsequent resurrection after the events of Blackest Night and Brightest Day, where his regular hand was restored.
