WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Strange Adventures #5, by Tom King, Mitch Gerads, Evan "Doc" Shaner and VC's Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

If there's any one superhero in the DC Universe that has had their reputation tarnished in the eyes of their peers, it's Adam Strange. After being implicated in the brutal murder of a man who accosted him during a book tour to promote his bestselling memoirs, Mister Terrific accepted a request from Batman to investigate the matter, with the presumption that this routine case would absolve Adam of any wrongdoing. What resulted, instead, was a mystery that began to call Adam's integrity into question as he and his wife Alanna reacted defensively, lashing out at their old friends in the Justice League.

Following Adam and Alanna's highly questionable conduct after the investigation began, Adam learns secondhand from Booster Gold that Batman and Superman have instructed the wider DC superhero community to sever all ties with Adam and his wife for the foreseeable future. Effectively isolated and excommunicated from the League, the Stranges are back on the defensive.

Unnerved by Terrific's initial line of questioning, the couple began to publicly slam his credibility on talk shows around the country. Incensed by the two turning on the man he had entrusted to carry out the investigation in a show of good faith, Batman privately confronted Alanna about her smear campaign against his friend at her home in Los Angeles. Unbeknownst to the Dark Knight, his tense exchange with Alanna was secretly filmed and sent to television talk shows the following morning to paint Batman and the rest of the Justice League in a negative light.

The fissures between the Stranges and the superhero community were later revealed to have dated back further than the investigation and publication of Adam's memoirs. Flashbacks revealed that Adam angrily had a falling out with Hal Jordan when he and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps were barred from participating in the devastating war between the Rannians and the Pykkts unfolding on Rann, as their peacekeeping status meant they had to play an impartial role. A later altercation with Superman turned physical, with Adam going as far to punch the Man of Steel when he turned down Adam's request for help in the cosmic conflict, only to break his hand on the bulletproof superhero's jawline.

For the first act of Strange Adventures, Adam and Alanna Strange have purposefully attempted to pit the general public against the Justice League, even strongly considering filing a lawsuit to halt Terrific's investigation. After their coordinated smear campaigns in the media and Adam's own volatile past with several Justice League members brought to light, Batman and Superman have chosen to not only disassociate themselves from their cosmic counterpart and longtime ally but to quietly forbid their colleagues from doing the same.

With his well-meaning but bumbling nature, Booster Gold revealed to Adam and Alanna their official standing with the League but it is unclear what actions the couple will take from this point. Their current strategy of lashing out against the other superheroes has backfired on them terribly and has given them the image of looking more guilty than innocent.
