Over three months into its wide release, Universal Pictures' Jurassic World Dominion has finally crossed the coveted $1 billion mark at the global box office.

Per Variety, the latest installment in the Jurassic World saga has hit $1 billion worldwide as of today, Sept. 23. Dominion initially premiered in theaters on June 10, making it one of the slowest films to hit that milestone in its original theatrical run. Other notable films that took over three months (or longer) to hit $1 billion include Disney and Pixar's Finding Dory, as well as Disney's own Zootopia and Frozen.

Dominion earned approximately $145 million domestically over its opening weekend back in June. At the time of writing, the Jurassic World threequel has brought in $376 million domestically and $624 million oversees, for a grand total of $1 billion. While Dominion hasn't quite been able to match the box office success of its franchise predecessors, it still currently stands as the second-highest-grossing film of 2022 worldwide, coming up behind Top Gun: Maverick ($1.464 billion). Domestically, Dominion is the third-highest-grossing film of the year, trailing behind both Maverick ($709 million) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($411 million).

Dominion is the third (and ostensibly final) film in the Jurassic World series, as well as the sixth film in the overall Jurassic Park franchise. With that in mind, Dominion is the fourth-highest-grossing Jurassic Park film worldwide, coming up behind Jurassic World ($1.672 billion), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($1.310 billion) and the original Jurassic Park ($1.046 billion). Dominion stands above The Lost World: Jurassic Park ($618.6 million) and Jurassic Park III ($368.8 million).

Jurassic World Dominion Brings the Franchise to an End - For Now

Set four years after the events of Fallen Kingdom, Dominion takes place in a world where humans and dinosaurs now live alongside one another. "This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators," the film's official synopsis reads. Dominion marks the return of not only Jurassic World series regulars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, but also Jurassic Park veterans Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum.

Dominion is still playing in certain cinemas, though both the theatrical version and extended cut -- the latter of which is described by director Colin Trevorrow as the definitive version of the film -- are also currently streaming on Peacock. While Dominion is billed as the "epic conclusion of the Jurassic era," there have been murmurs regarding where the franchise could go from here. At this stage, however, nothing appears to be set in stone.
