Jurassic World Dominion star DeWanda Wise recently discussed the circumstances behind her dropping out of Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel after she was cast to play air force pilot Maria Rambeau.

In an interview with Gizmodo, Wise was asked whether she still believes leaving Captain Marvel was the right move. She clarified, "I always correct people, I did not choose to leave." She continued, "I would never make that choice for myself, that sounds ridiculous. You sign a contract for a TV show and it's in first position, and that's just a responsible... you have audience members who are like, 'I would've taken a lawsuit.' Good for you. I don't wanna be sued! Not trying to be sued by Spike Lee and Netflix. So, you know, at the time it was very disappointing, and also difficult in that context."

The actor then explained she would not have agreed to play Kayla Watts, who is an air force pilot like Maria Rambeau, had she appeared in Captain Marvel, despite any possible backlash from fans. "A lot of actors, we see what you say," she said. "We see when you're being like, 'Oh, you're so stupid'... It's a real practice to not get defensive when people are speaking about you like that online. But with this, obviously, clearly, if it's not clear by now, Maria was a pilot... I don't repeat performances. So, if I had played in Captain Marvel, if I had played a pilot, and then [Jurassic World: Dominion director Colin Trevorrow] called me for this and he's like, 'Guess what? She's a pliot!', I would've been like, 'I'm so sorry, I don't believe in capitalism. You're going to have to find someone else.'"

Wise concluded her answer by saying that it all panned out the way it was supposed to, and that she is happy with the outcome. "I think everything happens in the timing that it's meant to happen and I'm very thankful to be here now," she said.
