Jurassic World Dominion director Colin Trevorrow recently revealed that the Jurassic World trilogy was intended to radically alter the franchise's established formula.

Trevorrow discussed his approach to all three movies in an interview with Empire. "I specifically did something different than the other films in order to change the DNA of the franchise," he said. "The previous five films are plots about dinosaurs. This one is a story about characters in a world in which they coexist with dinosaurs. For the franchise to be able to move forward -- because it's inherently unfranchisable, there probably should have only been one Jurassic Park -- but if we're gonna do it, how can I allow them to tell stories in a world in which dinosaurs exist, as opposed to, 'Here's another reason why we're going to an island?"

Trevorrow's decision to forge a new path for the Jurassic franchise ultimately paid off. Each entry in the Jurassic World trilogy made over $1 billion at the global box office, with Jurassic World Dominion reaching this milestone in September 2022. That said, the film is one of the slowest to hit the $1 billion mark, joining the likes of Frozen, Zootopia and Finding Dory as a slow-burn blockbuster that took at least three months to amass this amount in ticket sales. Jurassic World Dominion is currently the second-highest-grossing movie of 2022 worldwide, behind Top Gun: Maverick.

Jurassic World Director Ponders an R-rated Entry

The film's success is all the more notable given it isn't the version Trevorrow originally intended to debut. The director previously confirmed that Jurassic World Dominion Extended Edition home release actually represents the cut of the movie he wanted to screen in cinemas. "We had finished film and we were in a scenario where we were asked to take out a good chunk of the movie, ultimately 14 minutes of the movie," Trevorrow explained. "So to have to go and try to figure out which of your darlings to kill, which can go."

Fans expecting to see more graphic content in the Jurassic World Dominion Extended Edition were out of luck, though, as the film's overall level of violence is broadly in-line with that of the theatrical cut. Trevorrow subsequently addressed the possibility of a more intense, R-rated entry in the Jurassic franchise, saying that this is something he'd be interested in seeing. The director added that he would want such a project to tell a self-contained story, and expressed concerns over how younger fans of the franchise would respond to it.

Both versions of Jurassic World Dominion are currently streaming on Peacock.
