Labor Day reports indicate that Universal's Jurassic World Dominion is closer than ever to reaching the coveted $1 billion mark at the global box office.

According to Deadline, Colin Trevorrow's latest entry in the Jurassic World series just hit an impressive $994.6 million worldwide -- but there is no telling just yet if it will reach the billion-dollar milestone, especially with sales slowing down. Whether Dominion reaches $1 billlion or not largely depends on how well the film does in Japan, which is the last market it was released in. Initially debuting two months ago, Dominion's earnings officially pushed the entire Jurassic Park franchise past the $6 billion mark.

Dominion's theatrical run bodes well for the film's future streaming success. The film hit Peacock on Sept. 2, with both the theatrical and extended versions available to stream. The extended version includes 14 minutes of new footage, behind-the-scenes looks and walkthroughs of the stunts and visual effects.

According to Trevorrow, the extended version is how he intended audiences to see Dominion. "We had finished film and we were in a scenario where we were asked to take out a good chunk of the movie, ultimately 14 minutes of the movie," he explained. "It really wasn't that I went back and did a director's cut, it's just that we have been honestly given a gift of being able to share the original film."

Where Does Jurassic World Go Next?

As far as the future of the Jurassic World films goes, nothing is set in stone -- but Trevorrow thinks it'd be fun to make a more edgy version next. "If we made a hard R really scary version, potentially very contained, I know I'd want to see that movie," he said.

And there's a chance that this potential R-rated dinosaur flick would see actor Bryce Dallas Howard reprising her role as the sequel trilogy's Claire Dearing, too. When asked if she'd consider returning, Howard said, "Yes." "That's such a special thing, and it's so rare for an actor to get to experience that, to revisit a character again and again," she elaborated. "In addition to that, it’s like decades between." DeWanda Wise, who plays Kayla Watts in Dominion, was equally enthusiastic about the idea of coming back for another film.

Jurassic World Dominion is currently playing in theaters and streaming on Peacock.
