In box office terms, the dinosaurs are truly back from the dead.

Hollywood trades including Deadline are reporting that Colin Trevorrow's Universal picture "Jurassic World" exceeded all expectations and drew in $204.59 million domestically during its opening weekend. That number ranks the film as the #2 all-time U.S. opening for a movie, edging out this summer's previous winner "Avengers: Age of Ultron's" $191.27 million and coming just shy of the original "Avengers" #1 performance at $207.4 million.

There is an outside chance that with a strong Sunday night performance, "Jurassic World" could over take Joss Whedon's original Avengers outing to become the #1 winner, but it's yet to be seen whether the film can push that far past early estimates.

The movie also hit some high marks in the specialty theater game, earning the best ever box office for RealD screenings at $71 million. It also broke records for IMAX with over $20.6 million in sales -- beating out previous champ "The Dark Knight Rises."

The rest of the box office weekend was full of previous openers trying to keep some buzz in the shadow of the dino's big weekend. "Spy" added $16 million for a $69.5 million overall take. "San Andreas" put up $11 million more to make it an overall $119.3 million winner for Warner Bros. Meanwhile, both "Insidious III" ($7.3 million for $37.37 million) and "Entourage" ($4.3 million for $25.87 million) earning decent if not spectacular bank.
