WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the third season of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, now streaming on Netflix

The scientists of Jurassic Park and Jurassic World have long experimented on new variants of the dinosaurs, giving them unique elements for various purposes. Perhaps the most prominent example of this was the Indomitus Rex, a hybrid of a Tyransours Rex and a Raptor. This was one of the most notable elements of Jurassic World, with the creature escaping and causing chaos across the island, helping set off the bedlam that resulted in the park being overrun with dinosaurs.

The Indomitus Rex appeared in the first season of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, which took place during the events of Jurassic World. But it turns out that Doctor Wu -- the notable developer of the dinosaurs -- had attempted a different kind of dinosaur first. This resulted in the creation of the Scorpius-Rex, which was meant as an early attempt at the kind of creation of the Indomitus Rex. However, this creature might actually be far more fearsome than the Indomitus Rex. Teased at the conclusion of Season 2, the Season 3 episode "Clever Girl" reveals more about the Scorpius-Rex.

While exploring a secret lab in search of information that can be used to help Sammi's family when they return from the island, she and Brooklyn end up discovering a series of files that outlined the creation of the creature. Doctor Wu initially expresses excitement at the creation of the creature, a new form of life. However, the Scorpius-Rex slowly revealed itself to be a temperamental beast, alternating from passive to aggressive in a moment. Making matter worse, the creature is shown to be a clever beast, quick on its feet and vicious when unleashed. The claws and sharp teeth make it plenty fearsome, but its most dangerous aspect is the toxic quills that line the dinosaur's skin. The Scorpius-Rex's one notable weakness is that it's easily distracted by flames or bright lights, which allows clever humans to divert its attention.

The creature's quills are shown to have a major effect on anyone struck with them, with even Wu almost dying after being struck by one of them. With no other option, Wu had the Scropius-Rex frozen cryogenically for further experimentation. But in the chaos of Jurassic World, it was able to escape confinement and move across Isla Nublar. The entire ecosystem of the island has to change due to the presence of the creature in Season 3, which quickly kills for the sheer enjoyment of it. Multiple dinosaurs are forced into unfamiliar terrain and remain aggressive due to the threat. The Scorpius-Rex even attacks the main cast and comes close to killing Sammi with one of its quills, forcing Yaz to rush to find the anti-venom to save her.

Perhaps the worst fact about the creature is an unintended advantage it develops that Wu never intended: it can reproduce asexually. Within six months, the Scorpius-Rex has birthed a rival, which quickly also spreads chaos across the island. Before they try to flee the island once and for all, the main cast decides they can't let it remain on the island to slaughter and reproduce. Instead, they end up luring the two creatures into the site of the original Jurassic Park in the eighth episode of the season, "Escape From Isla Nubar."

Alongside Blu -- the trained raptor from Jurassic World who ends up becoming an unlikely ally against the Scorpius-Rex -- the teens are able to bring down the building and kill the two hybrid dinosaurs as they escape. It's a lucky win over the franchises' most dangerous creature yet, but it won't be the last time the teams come face-to-face with such a formidable opponent.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous stars Paul-Mike’l Williams as Darius, Jenna Ortega as Brooklynn, Ryan Potter as Kenji, Raini Rodriguez as Sammy, Sean Giambrone as Ben and Kausar Mohammed as Yaz. Season 3 arrives on Netflix May 21.
