Jurassic World: Dominion director Colin Trevorrow says the upcoming film will give a key Tyrannosaurus rex its own origin story, much like in a superhero story.

In an interview with IGN, Trevorrow addressed delving into the distant past and thus making dinosaurs look more scientifically accurate through the addition of, among other things, feathers. "I think we have a really good logical explanation for why these are dinosaurs that look different than the other Jurassic dinosaurs have looked in the past," he explained. "In this case, it's that we're showing them in their original habitat. There was no frog DNA used to bridge the gaps in the genomes, so it gave us an opportunity to show dinosaurs with feathers."

Trevorrow then explained the feathered T-Rex seen in the movie will actually be the genetic basis for the one that played a key role in 1993's Jurassic Park and several subsequent movies . "It's an origin story, in the way we might get to do in a superhero film," Trevorrow said. "The T-Rex is a superhero for me. It really allows us to take this brilliant concept that [Jurassic Park author] Michael Crichton conceived, that is the foundation that all of this has been built on, and show it in its absolutely purest form.”

Based on a 1990 novel by Michael Crichton, the original Jurassic Park explored a world in which scientists resurrected dinosaurs and opened up a wildlife park for them. However, as the result of sabotage, the park's security precautions shutdown, leaving a group of people stranded and struggling to survive. The movie grossed more than $900 million worldwide and spawned a major multimedia franchise that has consisted of tie-in TV shows, video games and more. Jurassic Park was followed by two sequels that weren't as well received, 1997's The Lost World: Jurassic Park and 2001's Jurassic Park III.

In 2015, the franchise started up again with Jurassic World, which was directed by Trevorrow. Starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and Vincent D'Onofrio, Jurassic World sees the failed dinosaur park reopening and proving successful until a genetically-engineered dinosaur begins wreaking havoc. Jurassic World was a huge success at the box office, earning more than $1.670 billion worldwide to become one of the highest-grossing films ever. The movie currently has a 71 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

A sequel, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, released in 2018. Directed by J.A. Bayona, the movie earned more than $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office. However, Fallen Kingdom proved less successful with critics and only earned a 47 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie deals with the fallout of the events of Jurassic World.

Jurassic World: Dominion is currently set for release on June 10, 2022. The main cast of the previous Jurassic World movies are expected to return alongside original stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, who play Drs. Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler and Ian Malcolm, respectively. Plot details for the project, production on which was temporarily shutdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, are scarce at this time.
