The final trailer arrived this morning for director J.A. Bayona's Jurassic World: Forgotten Kingdom, bringing with it plenty of action, terror and plot details as we learn the real reason the dinosaurs are being rescued from the imminent volcanic eruption on Isla Nublar.

Along with all of that, however, are more than a few callbacks to previous films in the 25-year-old blockbuster franchise, and -- oh, yes -- dinosaurs in all shapes and sizes. Including Blue and the new hybrid, Indoraptor, naturally. We break down the highlights below.

So, DON'T Remain Absolutely Still?

Jurassic World 2

The opening sequence starts out lighthearted enough, with Chris Pratt's Owen Grady trapped between a sleeping Tyrannosaurus rex and the wall of the world's largest pet crate. But then the sedative wears off and her eye flies open in a closeup that's almost certainly on homage to the iconic scene from 1993's Jurassic Park in which the T-rex escapes its paddock and peers into the vehicle containing the very frightened Murphy children.

Wisely disregarding Alan Grant's advice from the original film to remain absolutely still, Owen makes a hurried escape, avoiding the dinosaur's enormous claws as he jumps through her open mouth, to (presumed) safety.

The Mission: To Save Blue (and, Oh, Some Other Dinosaurs)

Jurassic World 2

We of course already knew the gist of the sequel's plot, with Owen and Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire Dearing returning to Isla Nublar four years after the closing of Jurassic World, in hopes of saving the remaining dinosaurs from a volcanic eruption. Here, though, we learn they're not part of some mad dash to cram as many animals as they can upon a modern ark. No, Claire's Dinosaur Protection Group teams with Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell), the former partner of John Hammond, to rescue 11 species, including Owen's beloved Blue, the last surviving Velociraptors.

But it can't be as simple as that, can it?

Hey, Blue!

Jurassic World 2

Blue is key to the mission, and Owen is key to capturing the Velociraptors, so naturally he agrees to help find the animal he trained from a hatchling. The sequence is a callback not only to Jurassic World, in which Owen commanded the four raptors, but to the very beginnings of the Jurassic Park franchise with the introduction of this species. They hunt in packs, surrounding and herding their prey.

But here, of course Blue is the hunted, suddenly surrounded by mercenaries armed with tranquilizer rifles.

It Was All a Lie!

Jurassic World 2

We knew that the altruistic mission to save the poor dinosaurs from a second extinction was too good to be true, and here Claire comes to the same realization as Blue is transported by helicopter to the waiting ship. Lockwood doesn't intend to let the rescued animals roam a sanctuary on his sprawling estate, after all. No, he has other plans.

Still, that has to be better than dying in a volcanic eruption, right?

Here's the Diabolical Plan

Jurassic World 2

OK, maybe not. The intention is instead to sell the rarest creatures on Earth to the highest bidders. "The man who proved raptors can follow orders," says Rafe Spall's Eli Mills, "you never thought about how many millions a trained predator might be worth?" Probably not, but he's about to find out.

It's unclear whether the goal is to weaponize the dinosaurs, or simply to employ them as conversation pieces for the world's wealthiest people. Whatever the case, we can virtually guaranteed Mr. Burns and at least a few Bond villains are in attendance at the auction.

But, Wait! There's More!

Jurassic World 2

Auctioning off might seem like a dastardly enough scheme, but there's another wrinkle involving B.D. Wong's Dr. Henry Wu, former head geneticist at both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World. Therefore, you know it's a.) pretty evil; and b.) bound to go horribly wrong.

Worse still, it involves Blue. So, yeah, you know where this is headed ...

Enter ... Indoraptor

Jurassic World 2

The sequel's new genetic hybrid, Indoraptor, hasn't been a secret; it's been mentioned frequently, and featured prominently in the trailers for Fallen Kingdom, creeping across a child's bedroom like a nightmare monster come to life. Still, how it fit into the plot was never really clear. Oh, sure, we knew it was a successor of sorts to Indominus rex, the creature cooked up by Dr. Henry Wu in Jurassic World to draw more visitors to the theme park. But now we get a better idea of the hows and whys.

Another Wu creation, Indoraptor appears to be the reason Lockwood's people selected Blue to be rescued; we might assume by the creature's name that it's a cross between a Velociraptor and Indominus rex, but that's little more than an educated guess. Apparently hybrids are where the big money lies. "This is the most dangerous creature that ever walked the Earth," the auctioneer announces, all but ensuring the Indoraptor's escape.

John McClane Doesn't Have Anything on Blue

Jurassic World 2

No matter how awesome you think your favorite classic action movie is, we can guarantee it doesn't have a Velociraptor being propelled through a window by an explosion. Seriously, let's just pause for a moment to appreciate how wonderfully ludicrous this scene is. Blue, you're our new action hero.

From Straight-Up Action to Full-On Horror

Jurassic World 2

Naturally, the Indoraptor escapes, but whether it's through the actions of Owen and Blue, or by accident, isn't clear. But with that, the trailer moves from sci-fi action into horror, familiar territory for director J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage, A Monster Calls). It's a tonal shift into the realm of classic movie monsters; the above shot of the Indoraptor on a rooftop could easily have come from an adaptation of The Wolfman.

"It has a wonderfully, deliciously scary third act,” executive producer Steven Spielberg told Entertainment Weekly. “J.A. knows how to create terror, but he also knows how to orchestrate it so you’re not brutalized by it, and he has the gift of restraint. But when he needs to open up the throttle, he really knows how.”

Into the Depths

Jurassic World 2

Presumably there aren't the skeletal remains of behemoths in the pool of the Lockwood Estate, so we'll assume this creepy sequence takes place earlier in the film, near the shores of Isla Nublar. (Or perhaps it's in the big tank in Jurassic World.) Hey, the world's elite undoubtedly want something to stock in their private lakes or patrol the coast of their luxury islands.

That said, it doesn't seem like a particularly good idea to send someone into the depths in a tiny submersible when god-knows-what is prowling around in search of prey.

Feeding Time

Jurassic World 2

We saw in Jurassic World what a Mosasaurus could do to a shark dangling over its tank at feeding time, so why would anyone think the enormous carnivorous lizard would play nice with a helicopter teasing it with a man at the end of a rope?

In fairness, that's probably the guy we saw only moments before in the submersible, now being rescued from the jaws of the 50-foot beast (fingers crossed).

Is That a Dennis Nedry Callback?

Jurassic World 2

Clearly the lesson of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (and, well, life) is, don't dangle people like bait within reach of an enormous, carnivorous dinosaur. Here, the T-rex makes a triumphant return in the trailer to someone we can't quite identify, but we certainly hope is Wayne Knight (somehow) reprising his role as the dearly departed Dennis Nedry from Jurassic Park.

That yellow raincoat has to be a nod to Nedry, right?

'If I Don't Make It Back ...'

Jurassic World 2

Amid all the action, terror and erupting volcanoes, Jurassic World: Forgotten Kingdom doesn't forget that, despite his recent status as an action star, Chris Pratt is a comedy actor at heart. Here Pratt's Owen seemingly bids a heartfelt farewell to Clare, in case something should happen to him: "If I don't make it back ... remember, you're the one who made me come here."

But if there was an urge to end the trailer on an upbeat note, the filmmakers resisted it, instead leaving us with a warning from Jeff Goldblum's Dr. Ian Malcolm, and images of the Indoraptor.

Directed by J.A. Bayona from a script by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, James Cromwell, Ted Levine, Justice Smith, Geraldine Chaplin, Daniella Pineda, Toby Jones, Rafe Spall and Isabella Sermon, with BD Wong and Jeff Goldblum. The film arrives in theaters on June 22.
