Edgy superhero shows are all the buzz these days. The Boys is Amazon Prime’s biggest hit, Watchmen is set to take HBO by storm, and Netflix’s adaptation of Gerard Way’s Umbrella Academy was a big enough success with audiences to warrant a second season.

But with Mark Millar’s illustrious catalog of comic books and graphic novels under Netflix’s creative library, we don’t have to wait very long for their next genre-subverting superhero show. Cue Jupiter’s Legacy - a show about not-so-perfect people in tights and the kids who hate them. If that doesn’t sound enticing already, here’s a quick crash course on the characters from the comics… just so you’re all caught up before the show is up for binging in the near future.

10 Sheldon Sampson (The Utopian)

Sheldon Sampson is an ordinary man with an extraordinary sense of patriotism. To Sheldon, the United States is the single greatest concept in the history of mankind. However, in 1929, Sheldon loses everything - all his wealth and possessions - in the Stock Market crash. Never one to buckle under pressure, Sheldon ventures 600 miles West of Cape Verde to an island that he believes, thanks to a dream he had, is America’s salvation. The catalytic journey turns Sheldon Sampson into a superhuman figure aptly named the Utopian. Donning a red and white costume and displaying Superman-esque powers, the Utopian eventually headquarters himself in New York City and forms the superhero group called the Union.

Josh Duhamel will play the Utopian.

9 Walter Sampson (Brainwave)

Sheldon Sampson wasn’t the only one to travel to the island. His older brother, Walter, and soon-to-be-wife, Grace, were among those in Sheldon’s group… and both would also become the core members of the Union. Walter Sampson became ‘Brainwave’ - a powerful psychic with the ability to isolate a person’s mind from their body before trapping them in a reality of Brainwave’s choosing. Think Scarlet Witch from comics like House Of M. For some strange reason, the only person immune to Brainwave’s telepathic attacks is Sheldon Sampson, although other members of the Union have figured out clever ways to protect themselves from Walter’s tricks as well.

Ben Daniels will play Brainwave.

8 Grace Sampson (Lady Liberty)

Grace Sampson, second wife to Sheldon Sampson, is one of the most powerful superheroes on the planet. Once the captain of the women’s wrestling team, Grace takes on the name ‘Lady Liberty’ after leaving the mysterious island with superhuman strength in tow.

After sorting out family drama with Sheldon’s first wife, Jane, Lady Liberty and the Utopian go on to form a family of their own. The superhuman tag-team become parents to Brandon and Chloe - the first children in the Second Generation of superheroes.

Leslie Bibb will play Lady Liberty.

7 Chloe Sampson

Jupiter’s Legacy creator Mark Millar has said that he created the super-siblings, Chloe and Brandon Sampson, to explore the idea of two twenty-somethings struggling to cope with the fame brought upon by their “perfect” parents. Although Chloe inherited special abilities from her parents, she spends most of her time dabbling in drugs, nightclubs, and basic socialite stuff. Unable to live-up to the overly-idealistic nature of her parents, Chloe doesn’t exactly don a superhero name… and uses her supersonic scream, among other frighteningly destructive powers, for self-defense instead of saving the planet.

Elena Kampouris will play Chloe Sampson.

6 Brandon Sampson

One of the most interesting characters in Mark Millar’s series is Brandon Sampson, the self-indulgent son of Sheldon and Grace with a massive chip on his shoulder. Like his sister Chloe, Brandon is cynical about the superhero business that runs in his family. He spends most of his time abusing his celebrity status by obtaining endorsement deals and “entertaining” his superhero groupies. Unlike his supposedly-altruistic parents, Brandon has no interest in fighting crime or upholding truth and justice. In his jaded state, Brandon believes that all the great supervillains have come and gone - leaving the new generation with nothing but chump change as far as bad guys go.

Andrew Horton will play Brandon Sampson.

5 Fitz Small (The Flare)

Fitz Small, or The Flare, is one of the six founding members of the Union. His powers include super speed, flight, super-strength, and the ability to fire energy blasts. Like all superheroes, Fitz’s life isn’t spared a modicum of drama. However, the Flare’s crises are not so much of the supervillain kind, but more on a “chaotic family” level.

From strained relationships with his wife and kids to complicated affairs with younger women, Fitz Small seems to have all the power to save the world but none to help himself whatsoever.

Mike Wade will play The Flare on Netflix.

4 George Hutchene (Skyfox)

George Hutchence, also known as Skyfox, is one of the six founding members of the Union… and an extremely powerful superhuman. His powers include flight, super strength, and the ability to survive almost a mile above Earth’s atmosphere. He’s also a world-famous playboy, known to the public as the Union’s sex symbol. At one time, he was Sheldon Sampson’s closest ally and friend; a companion who Sheldon could turn to for anything and everything. Their relationship is put to the test at some point, and the once inseparable duo fall apart, eventually becoming mortal enemies.

Matt Lanter will play Skyfox on Netflix.

3 Baryon

Baryon seems to be a character created specifically for the Netflix adaptation of Jupiter’s Legacy. There aren’t many details about the character just yet, but we know that Baryon will serve as the lead villain on the first season of the show. Chase Tang, a Taiwan-born actor who immigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada with his family, has been tapped to bring the role to life.

While Baryon may be the big bad on the show, Jupiter’s Legacy mostly revolves around the internal conflicts of the heroes themselves. The burden of being caped crusaders is the true antagonist of Mark Millar’s work.

2 Petra Small

Fitz Small has three children; two boys and a girl. While the books focused mainly on Peter Small, Fitz’s son, it looks like the Netflix adaptation will shine a light on Fitz’s daughter, Petra Small, as well. Either that or Petra’s character will be heavily based on Peter from the books in a case of source material role reversal. Like their father, all of Fitz’s kids possess superpowers. They also despise their dad for his infidelity and negligence towards the family. This results in some pretty heated family dynamics, with some cool superhero antics in tow.

Tenika Davis will play Petra Small on Netflix.

1 Richard Conrad (Blue-Bolt)

It’s interesting to note that a prominent figure from the Jupiter’s Legacy comic books has yet to be cast in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation. Much like Sheldon, Fitz, George, Walter, and Grace, Richard Conrad aka Blue-Bolt is one of the founding members of the Union. A neonatal surgeon by profession, Richard is a gay character in hiding who struggles with the nature of his identity. His arc is explored in the spinoff comic, Jupiter’s Circle, and is one of the more fascinating stories in the series.

While no one has been put in the role of Blue-Bolt just yet, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the character show up in this season or the next, particularly due to his significance to this group of problematic heroes.
