One of the most well-known images from horror artist Junji Ito finds life in this creepy cosplay of Azami Kurotani from Uzumaki.

The cosplayer Timunnie recently uploaded her take on the “Spiral Girl” to Instagram. The post displays a headshot of her playing the role of Azami, with stellar make-up effects replicating a famous panel from the manga. It shows the character with the iconic spiral scar on her face, twisting around her left eye, with said organ falling into the spiral. Timunnie is also decked out in monochrome face paint, reflecting the colorless aesthetic of the source material.

The Cosplayer's Creative Take on Spiral Girl

Timunnie adds a unique spin to the cosplay through the use of a hijab, which is fashioned into a hairpiece, capturing the short black bob-cut that the character features in the artwork. The post features two pictures, the first showing her looking into her spiral scar with her left eye and the other coming in closer as the cosplayer glares into the camera.

There was plenty of support for the costume in the comments, with users leaving a plethora of positive replies. Many of them featured the phrase “Keren banget,” which roughly translates from Indonesian to English as “so cool.” Other commenters replied with words such as “this is crazy.” Some even expressed fear when looking at the pictures.

Junji Ito's Iconic Horror Stories

Junji Ito is a horror artist with many stories to his name. Some of his most well-known are Gyo, Tomie, Black Paradox, No Longer Human, and what is often considered his magnum opus, Uzumaki. Besides his work on books, he has also produced a large amount of shorts; notable titles include “The Long Dream,” “The Enigma of Amigara Fault,” “Fashion Model,” and “The Hanging Balloons.” His work has been collected into multiple compilations, with The Junji Ito Story Collection soon to release two new titles -- Tombs and Soichi.

Ito’s work has also been adapted many times, with a live-action Tomie series ranking as one of his most successful. In addition, his stories have been compiled into two separate anime anthology shows. The first of these, titled Junji Ito Collection and produced by Studio Deen, received poor reviews. There was a second attempt from the same studio named Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre, licensed by Netflix. Fans received Japanese Tales of the Macabre more positively than the original project, but it still drew heavy criticism.

Finally, the character of Azami may be destined for the small screen as Production I.G. is working on an adaptation of Uzumaki. However, the production has received multiple delays, with no release date at the time of writing.
