Julia Ormond In Talks To Play Superman's Mom In Man Of Steel

With filming set to begin in August on Man of Steel, Deadline reports that Julia Ormond is in talks to play one of the last major roles, that of Superman's biological mother Lara.

The English actress, who's appeared in such films as Legends of the Fall and First Knight, would join Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner and Michael Shannon in director Zack Snyder's reboot of the Warner Bros. franchise. Russell Crowe reportedly has been offered the role of Superman's biological father Jor-El.

Debuting in a 1939 Superman comic strip, Lara made her first appearance on the big screen in the 1948 serial Superman Comes to Earth, in which she was played by Luana Walters. However, the character was most famously portrayed by Susannah York in 1978's Superman, 1980's Superman II and, in voice only, 1987's Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.

The 46-year-old Ormond, who won an Emmy Award last year for her supporting role in Temple Grandin, is a recurring guest star in the 10th and final season of Law Order: Criminal Intent.

Man of Steel is written by David S. Goyer from a story by Goyer and Nolan. Charles Rovan, Emma Thomas and Deborah Snyder also are producing. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are executive producers.
