A little more than a month after it was announced that the Jujutsu Kaisen manga was going on an indefinite hiatus, a date has been given for when Yuji Itadori and company will return.According to Weekly Shonen Jump News, Jujutsu Kaisen will resume its serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 35, which will be released in Japan on Aug. 2. In June, it was announced that the series was going on an indefinite hiatus due to the health of the series' creator, Gege Akutami. "I have been asked by the editorial department to take a break from the series," Akutami said at the time, adding, "But I don’t want to slow down the weekly serialization of Jujutsu Kaisen since I’d like to draw the end of the series as soon as possible." Akutami estimated at the time that the break should take about a month, and reassured fans that their condition was not serious, and that their mental health was fine.
Concerns over manga artists being overworked and the effects that has on their health have been heightened recently following the untimely death of Berserk creator Kentaro Miura. Other popular manga series, such as One Piece and Hunter X Hunter have also taken extended breaks or slowed down their publishing schedule in the past due to concerns over their creators' health. The Misfit at Demon King Academy manga was recently cancelled after the manga's artist, Kayaharuka, passed away suddenly.
Issue 35 will be an eventful publication for Weekly Shonen Jump, as in addition to the return of Jujutsu Kaisen, that issue will also feature the premiere of a new story from the creators of The Promised Neverland, which is being released to coincide with that series' fifth anniversary.
Jujutsu Kaisen tells the story of Yuji Itadori, a high school student who unwittingly becomes the host of Ryomen Sukuna, a powerful spirit. Sukuna is a member of a race known as Curses, which are spirits that have been transformed into monstrous beings that seek to harm the living. The manga was adapted into an anime series by Attack on Titan studio MAPPA in 2020. An anime movie, which is based on the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 prequel manga, will debut in Japan on December 2021. The Jujutsu Kaisen manga is localized in English and released in North America in print by Viz Media, while the anime series is available for streaming on Crunchyroll and HBO Max.
