Megumi Fushiguro is the quiet and complex member of the popular Jujutsu Kaisen trio, but he's surprisingly similar to the rambunctious and mischievous Satoru Gojo. Author Gege Akutami's usage of parallels between the otherwise juxtaposed characters showcases Megumi's potential and importance in the anime.

A descendant of the Zenin clan, Megumi tends to brush off the family name, using his mother's maiden name instead. He himself seems ignorant of the power he possesses, but his potential is easily recognized by Gojo as well as Sukuna, the King of Curses.

The History of The Zenin and Gojo Clans

Gojo Satoru and Megumi Fushiguro

The Gojo and Zenin clans are two of the three Great Families within Jujutsu sorcery, and Gojo often educates Megumi on their history. In one instance, he asks Megumi if he knows why the Gojo and Zenin clans are on bad terms and continues to reveals that the clan heads fought against one another, leading to their deaths.

What is interesting about this interaction is that these two heads were very similar to Gojo and Megumi. The Gojo clan's head had inherited the Six Eyes and Limitless techniques -- like Satoru Gojo -- and the Zenin head had the 10 Shadows technique like Megumi. Gojo even makes a point of this, asking Megumi if he understands what he's trying to say, implying Fushiguro has the potential to be as strong as him -- if not stronger.

Gojo and Fushiguro Share The One-Man Team Premise

satoru gojo

Jujutsu Kaisen's Gojo Clan is represented by Gojo Satoru alone, which implies he is the only remaining member. This is not the case, however -- when Satoru Gojo is captured in the "Shibuya" arc, the Gojo and Kamo Clans come together to request the Zenin clan be removed from the trio of Great Families following a massacre on the family. This proves there are members of the Gojo clan lurking in the shadows but not necessarily contributing to Jujutsu society, but the clans still gather for this meeting.

Following the massacre of the Zenin Clan, Fushiguro becomes the family's sole functioning member. Maki Zenin, while still alive, will likely be branded a criminal due to her actions against the Zenin clan, leaving Megumi the head. It can be assumed that Fushiguro is now the one-man team behind the Zenin family and will have to rebuild and represent it -- just like Gojo.

Megumi's Potential in Jujutsu Kaisen

Megumi in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Megumi Fushiguro was deemed a second-grade Jujutsu sorcerer upon enrolling in Jujutsu High, a rare phenomenon. It's clear that despite being awarded this position, Megumi remained unaware of his potential. Two crucial figures helped him realize the power he could possess: Satoru Gojo and Ryomen Sukuna.

In Jujutsu Kaisen's "Cursed Womb" arc, Sukuna tells Megumi he has the potential to exorcise a special grade curse, which somewhat mirrors Gojo's influence. Sukuna and Gojo are seen as the strongest members of their respective sides, with Sukuna being the King of Curses and Gojo the strongest Jujutsu sorcerer.

Megumi is recognized by the strongest sorcerer and the strongest curse, which exaggerates how much potential and power lies within him. Both tell him he misunderstands his own abilities and push him to re-evaluate the 10 Shadows technique and unlock his strength, and he has clearly developed over time.

Megumi's Unknown Abyss & Gojo's Infinite Void

Looking at the similarities between Megumi and Gojo's domain expansions draws another parallel between the characters. Gojo's Infinite Void places the target in a domain that overloads their senses with information to the point where they are so overwhelmed that they become immobile. Interestingly, Megumi's Unknown Abyss domain expansion is almost the complete opposite of this, taking advantage of the absolute nothingness of the shadows and depriving the target of all senses.

While these domains directly contrast one another, their outcome is the same; the victim is immobilized by the overstimulation or complete depravity of their senses. This subtle parallel shows the potential Megumi could have in Jujutsu Kaisen once he gains more experience.

Gege Akutami will likely continue to compare Satoru Gojo and Megumi Fushiguro in future developments. The manga's current "Culling Game" arc is expected to bring more understanding to the interesting student/mentor dynamic between the two, with Fushiguro's potential becoming more realized.
