Jujutsu Kaisen's cursed energy is one of the most dynamic power systems in contemporary shonen manga. No two cursed techniques are exactly alike, which gives rise to truly unique abilities such as Inumaki Toge's Cursed Speech. It's an ability exclusive to Inumaki in his universe, but certainly not one that JJK pioneered. In fact, Cursed Speech has an almost identical twin in My Hero Academia.
Inumaki's Cursed Speech imbues every word he speaks with a curse that compels his target to obey his orders. It has varying levels of effectiveness depending on many factors, such as the difference in cursed energy between Inumaki and his opponent, how specific Inumaki's order is, and how focused he is on exerting his will over others. Once Inumaki successfully activates his cursed technique, however, his target has no choice but to obey, from simple orders like "run away" to fatal orders like "die".
The Dangers of Cursed Speech in Jujutsu Kaisen
Inumaki's Technique is not without its risks. Unlike other sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen, he is incapable of deactivating his ability. To prevent himself from accidentally cursing his friends, Inumaki limits his vocabulary to a code made out of onigiri ingredients. This makes initial conversation a hurdle for the jujutsu sorcerer but once his peers get used to his "language", communication with Inumaki flows easily.
Like all other cursed techniques, Inumaki's Cursed Speech has a negative effect on its user's body. In this case, the technique rebounds on Inumaki's throat, causing him to develop a sore throat and, in extreme cases, cough up blood. It's for this reason that Inumaki normally carries some cough medicine with him while on exorcisms. When his symptoms become too painful to bear, a quick swig usually gets him healthy enough to continue using his cursed speech in a pinch.
What My Hero Academia Quirk Is Inumaki Toge's Cursed Speech?
Inumaki's Cursed Speech in Jujutsu Kaisen is most similar to Hitoshi Shinso's Brainwash Quirk in My Hero Academia. Like Inumaki, Shinso's Quirk gives him the voice-activated ability to compel those around him to follow his orders. However, Shinso's Brainwash has a slightly different activation requirement. Before he can take control of someone, he has to successfully convince them to respond to any question he asks.
The activation requirement for Shinso's Brainwash Quirk does make it more difficult to use if his opponents recognize who they're facing, but Shinso has a work-around for that. His support item, the Persona Chords, allows him to manipulate his voice to sound like anyone else's without losing the Brainwashing effect of his Quirk. Hitoshi Shinso's Quirk is one of My Hero Academia's most insidious and is certainly the equal to Inumaki Toge's Cursed Speech.
