Jujutsu Kaisen takes on a new dimension in the latest fan film from RE:Anime.
The new video recreates a fight from the series' Kyoto Goodwill Event arc, which pitted the students of Tokyo's Jujutsu High against the sorcerers-in-training from the establishment's sister school in Kyoto. The fan film focuses on one of the highlights from that arc, the battle between Tokyo's cursed weapon specialist Maki Zenin and the Kyoto school's speedy swordswoman Kasumi Miwa. The short movie was directed by Nik Shaw and Yoshi Sudarso, and stars Hana Wu as Maki and Julie Zhan as "Useless" Miwa. The film was shot and around the LA River, and Shaw thanks the two actors for doing a fight scene within the body of water, because as Shaw and anyone who has ever been to Los Angeles will tell you, that river is "digusting."
The Jujutsu Kaisen fan film is just one of many live-action recreations of anime that the RE:Anime YouTube channel has created. The channel has also produced high-quality fan films based on Naruto, One-Punch Man, and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Shaw ends the channel's latest video by revealing that they are now working on a fan film based on Nakaba Suzuki's Seven Deadly Sins.
Fans who want to see more of Maki's beat downs should keep an eye out for Jujutsu Kaisen 0. The series' first movie is a prequel that doesn't feature the series' main character, Yuji Itadori, but it does star several of his older classmates, including Maki. A new, action-packed trailer of the movie was released at this year's Jump Festa. The trailer shows off many of the Jujutsu High students, including the movie's central protagonist, Yuta Okkotsu, taking on Suguru Geto. The movie opened in Japan on Dec. 24 and has already pulled in a record 2.69 billion yen (about $23.5 million USD,) and is on track to be one of the highest grossing anime movies of all time. Details for the movie's international release have yet to be announced.
Jujutsu Kaisen was created by Gege Akutami and was first published in 2017. In three short years, it has become one of the most popular anime and manga franchises in the world, with over 60 million copies of the manga in circulation worldwide. An anime adaptation, produced by Attack on Titan studio MAPPA, completed its first season in March. Despite taking a two month hiatus in the summer, Akutami's manga series topped stiff competition from Demon Slayer and Tokyo Revengers and was the best-selling manga in Japan for 2021.
