Adult Swim announced Ninja Kamui, a new show from Jujutsu Kaisen anime director Sunghoo Park.

In its announcement, Adult Swim describes the new series as a "futuristic action/adventure." The series is being produced at E&H Production and Sola Entertainment, the digital animations studio that is also working on the upcoming Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim. Sola previously worked with Adult Swim on the sci-fi action series Blade Runner: Black Lotus, which aired on the network in late 2021. The series will feature characters designed by Takeshi Okazaki, the artist behind the cult-classic Afro Samurai. A premiere date for Ninja Kamui was not announced, but the show will be available on both Adult Swim and HBO Max when it is released.

Director Sunghoo Park is best known for helming the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen's anime adaptation, as well as the series' first movie, Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Both the anime series and the movie have received widespread acclaim for their intricate action choreography and impactful animation. Prior to Jujutsu Kaisen, Park directed God of High School, an anime based on a popular manhwa of the same name. He also worked as an animator on several popular anime series from studio MAPPA, including Yuri!! on Ice and Garo: Vanishing Line.

"This is a story I've always wanted to tell," said Park of the new series, adding, "Transgression and punishment of a ninja who loses everything and goes out for revenge, and what lies at the end of his road. I am very excited about this new project and hope fans will be too."

Ninja Kamui will tell the story of Joe Higan, a skilled assassin who was trained by a powerful clan of ninjas. Higan travels to America to raise his family and escape his bloody past, but the clan he used to work for tracks him down, murders his family, and leaves him for dead. Now seeking revenge, Higan must use ancient ninja techniques to strike back against the clan's new generation of high-tech warriors, which includes combat cyborgs and rival ninjas.

The new series was announced at the same time as Rick and Morty: The Anime, a new ten-episode spinoff of the popular sci-fi comedy. “Toonami helped introduce anime to a U.S. audience 25 years ago, and is creating new, dynamic originals for the next generation of anime fans,” said Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim following the announcement of both series. “These two series build on the legacy of those recent originals such as Fena: Pirate Princess, Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Shenmue the Animation, with Uzumaki and Housing Complex C, premiering later this year.”
