The official Jujutsu Kaisen Twitter account unveiled new key art to promote the rebroadcast of the anime's first season in Japan.

SPOILERS FOR JUJUTSU KAISEN SEASON 1

The new artwork shows the series' protagonist, first-year high schooler Yuji Itadori, facing off against the maniacal Mahito. The "special-grade" curse served as Yuji's main foe in the first season of the show, with Mahito forcing Yuji into killing his own friend after using his "human transfiguration" powers to turn the boy into a monster. This deadly clash began in Episode 9 of Season 1, entitled "Small Fry and Reverse Retribution," which is set to be rebroadcast on May 29 in Japan.

The show follows Yuji, a high schooler who becomes the vessel for an ancient curse named Ryomen Sukuna, who was once one of the world's greatest and most-feared jujutsu sorcerers. With Sukuna's twenty fingers (he had four hands) cut off and sealed away, the only way to deal with the threat entirely is for a compatible vessel to ingest all the fingers and then be exorcised. While searching for the rest of Sukuna's fingers, Yuji becomes the target of a group of sentient Curses — monsters born from the humanity's negative emotions — including the immature but sadistic Mahito, who pushes Yuji into using Sukuna's dangerous powers.

The first season of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime originally aired in 2020 and was produced by studio MAPPA, best known for their work on Attack on Titan: Final Season. MAPPA also released the wildly successful prequel film, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which became the fourth-highest grossing anime film of all time in the United States. As of April 2022, the film sold 9.5 million tickets, grossing over 13 billion yen ($108 million) since its local release in December 2022.

The series is based on the best-selling manga by Gege Akatami, currently serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump and published in North America under Viz Media, with the 16th volume available on June 21. The manga has similarly seen great sales, with 65 million copies in circulation by April 2022, and it became the best-selling manga of 2021 in Japan, with 30 million copies sold in that year alone. The series has been consistently praised by critics for its storytelling and lore, with comparisons to Bleach by Tite Kubo and Tokyo Ghoul by Sui Ishida.
