In Jujutsu Kaisen, the hit anime of fall 2020, cursed spirits are a jujutsu sorcerer's greatest enemies. The protagonist of the series, Yuji Itadori, even finds himself in the terrible situation of becoming the vessel of the King of Curses himself, Ryomen Sukuna.

But Sukuna wasn't always a curse; he was once a human sorcerer and only became a cursed spirit after his death. To avoid becoming a vengeful spirit, sorcerers have to be killed using jujutsu. And yet, there are advantages to being a curse, ones that outweigh the benefits of being a sorcerer.

10 Curses Wield The Power Of Negative Emotions

Jujutsu Kaisen Mahito

Curses manifest out of cursed energy, which is in turn created by the negative emotions humanity emanates. Different locations, ideas, tasks, or experiences cause people to experience anguish, fear, disgust, and hatred, which leads to the accumulation of cursed energy. That makes it very easy for curses to develop. In a world that holds so much stress and suffering, the life of a young curse is almost the exact reverse of that of a young human, since it's very easy for curses to grow and propagate.

Cursed spirit Mahito is one such example. Many characters refer to him as "childish," and he is repeatedly shown as not having full control over his own powers. Even so, he's one of the most formidable opponents the heroes have to face, having been created from the hatred humans show toward each other.

9 Curses Are Invisible to Normal Humans

Jujutsu Kaisen _ Anime

Curses are invisible to regular humans who can't see cursed energy. That means they can happily feed on their target's emotions, with their chosen prey none the wiser. A jujutsu sorcerer may appear to exorcise the curse, but that won't happen immediately, certainly not before the curse gains strength.

In the anime, a low-level curse is shown lingering around an unknowing bakery employee. Jujutsu sorcerer Kento Nanami passes by and exorcises it, but he could have very easily missed it had he not entered the bakery.

8 Curses Possess Powerful Techniques And Lethal Abilities

Jujutsu Kaisen Eso

Even low-level curses can utterly obliterate a regular human. They have different types of abilities, such as animalistic features like claws and fangs, but also enhanced speed and strength.

On top of that, curses can manipulate cursed energy and more powerful ones can even use techniques and summon a Domain. The Cursed Womb: Death Painting Eso uses techniques like Decay and Rot in his battle with Nobara and Yuji. He is ultimately defeated, but sorcerers caught off guard wouldn't have stood a chance.

7 Curses Don't Have Physical Bodies, So They Can't Be Hurt By Normal Attacks

Due to the way they are created, curses don't have physical bodies. Their whole existence rotates around cursed energy. That means the only thing that can hurt them is the same thing that created them; physical attacks don't do any damage.

Jujutsu sorcerers must use cursed techniques or weapons to exorcise their cursed foes. There are several exceptions, such as cursed corpses, which can appear naturally as hostile entities but they are most often used as tools by sorcerers. The cursed corpse Panda is even able to gain a consciousness of his own.

6 Curses Can Regenerate After Serious Injuries

Gojo Vs Jogo _ Jujutsu Kaisen

The nature of a curse makes it possible for them to heal their own injuries in battle. Through the manipulation of cursed energy, they're able to regenerate in all but the worst circumstances. They can even regrow lost limbs. After a fight with Satoru Gojo, the cursed spirit Jogo is almost completely obliterated. The only thing left of him is his head, and yet, he survives and regenerates.

5 Curses Are Much Stronger Than Jujutsu Sorcerers

It comes as no surprise that, considering their virtually limitless power source, curses are collectively much stronger than jujutsu society. Jujutsu sorcerers often struggle to find capable people to deal with problematic situations. They simply don't have enough qualified staff.

Satoru Gojo makes a big difference, as he keeps the balance from tipping in favor of the curses. But even Gojo is just one man, and no matter what he might claim, he isn't omnipotent.

4 Curses Can Use Sukuna's Fingers to Boost Their Power

Jujutsu Kaisen at first focuses on the heroes' quest to find Sukuna's cursed fingers, for the purpose of finally destroying the King of Curses once and for all. But this isn't an easy task, and it doesn't come without its risks.

The fingers are highly dangerous cursed objects, and curses that come in contact with them become far more powerful. Even while contained by his vessel, Sukuna is an opponent to be feared and his power can always turn the tide in a battle.

3 Special Grade Curses Can Act As An Organized Group

Yuji Vs Hanami _ Jujutsu Kaisen

Since Yuji Itadori inadvertently awoke Sukuna by eating one of his fingers, curses have become more active. Four special grade spirits have also appeared, embodying the most powerful fears and negative emotions humans emanate.

Hanami, for example, is born out of humans' hatred toward the environment and aims to protect the planet from humanity's poisonous influence. To this end, the cursed spirits team up, and they're even more lethal together than they are apart. Weaker curses don't have this ability to communicate, but they are drawn to each other and can attack in packs.

2 Curses Can Experience Emotions Too

Jujutsu Kaisen Choso

While most curses aren't sentient in the way special grades are, their nature makes them prone to find enjoyment in other people's pain. Most curses also take great pleasure in toying with humans; both Sukuna and Mahito display this tendency a lot. And then there are those who show attachment to each other. The Curse Womb: Death Paintings are a clear example of that phenomenon.

Choso and his brothers Kechizu and Eso are very close, to the point that Kechizu dispels his cursed technique during his battle with Nobara and Yuji for his brother's sake. Choso genuinely mourns them when they're gone. While this kind of affection is noted as unusual among cursed spirits, that doesn't make it any less important.

1 Some Curses Are Impossible To Destroy

Jujutsu Kaisen Ryomen Sukuna

The power of jujutsu sorcerers can destroy curses, but there are exceptions to every rule. Some curses are impossible to exorcise, and sorcerers have to get around this limitation in the hope of containing them.

This happens to Sukuna, whose power was sealed in his fingers, all of which became sealed talismans of their own. It's not an infallible method, and it's not impossible for such a curse to return. This is why Yuji finds himself forced to hunt down and consume all the fingers, knowing that he's going to die once he achieves his goal.
