Anyone who's watched the series should easily recognize the controversy in Jujutsu Kaisen. This anime embraces controversy by including a cast of characters whose fighting ability is only as good as long as they're consistently absorbed in the negative power of cursed energy.

Gojo, Yuji, and Megumi each have their controversial moments in the first season of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime adaptation. Many other characters have also received their share of controversy in the manga, so anime-only fans will have to wait for more seasons to see just how controversial Jujutsu Kaisen can get.

WARNING: Spoilers Ahead!

10 Junpei Took Out Frustration On Old Classmates

Junpei Yoshino looking back at something in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime.

Most Jujutsu Kaisen fans have very little love for Mahito while some downright hate him. Despite disliking Mahito, however, Junpei manages to win over many hearts despite serving as Mahito's minion for the majority of his time on screen.

Although Yuji tries to show fans that Junpei is nothing more than a victim, the rampage Junpei enacts at his former high school is brutal. After embracing his poisonous Cursed Technique, Junpei uses his power to get revenge. Fans may try to justify Junpei's rampage by pointing out he's a victim, but the way he mercilessly attacked his fellow classmates is pretty controversial.

9 Gojo Teases Principal Gakuganji Constantly

Gakuganji and Gojo arguing in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Principal Gakuganji doesn't earn much love from Jujutsu Kaisen fans, but there's reason to believe he deserves as much recognition as Gojo-sensei. Gojo would never accept this idea because every time he interacts with Gakuganji he can't help but see him as a representation of corrupt higher-ups in Jujutsu society.

Gojo and Gakuganji's encounters are controversial because of how Gakuganji is perceived rather than Gojo's behavior. After taking a look at Gakuganji's Cursed Technique and his lifelong commitment to teaching, fans can see that the two characters have more in common than Gojo wants to admit.

8 Gojo Uses Movies To Teach Yuji About Cursed Energy Control

In the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen, Gojo and Yuji spend a lot of time training off-screen. After Yuji is reported dead, he's hidden from the world so that Gojo can train him in the basics of jujutsu, but that training is surprisingly laidback.

Without Nanami's work, Gojo's teaching methods look more like slacking off while watching movies than actual training. If you credit Gojo for the work Nanami put in while training Yuji, there's no reason to question the strongest jujutsu sorcerer's teaching methods.

7 Yuji Was Permitted To Enroll At Tokyo Jujutsu High

Sukuna grins evilly in his domain - Jujutsu Kaisen

After consuming a few of Sukuna's fingers, Yuji is welcomed into the first-year class at Tokyo Jujutsu High. As a student at Tokyo Jujutsu High, Yuji is given access to some of the best jujutsu training.

Yuji's acceptance is controversial because he historically lacks cursed energy. To some, cursed energy is the most important aspect of being a jujutsu sorcerer. Yuji's lack of power and his connection to the King of Curses is more than enough reason for the higher-ups to question his enrollment.

6 Sukuna Continues To Act Suspicious Around Megumi

Fushiguro and Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen

Ryomen Sukuna is a menace in Jujutsu Kaisen's universe. Since being introduced, Sukuna has threatened to kill Satoru Gojo, steal Yuji Itadori's body, and has spent far too much time fawning over Megumi Fushiguro. Sukuna's fascination with Megumi is still a mystery.

More than likely, Sukuna hopes to absorb Megumi's incredible Cursed Technique in order to add it to his collection. While this idea is exciting, fans still find Sukuna's behavior suspicious. Some might even call it controversial.

5 Kechizu & Eso Blurred The Line Between Curse & Human

Cursed Spirit Eso Fights Yuji and Nobara

Jujutsu Kaisen has a lot of work to do before it can push viewers to empathize with cursed spirits. The manipulative actions taken by Mahito and the unfiltered violence enacted by Jogo sets cursed spirits directly into the role of antagonist.

Dedicated fans know that Kechizu and Eso are not truly cursed spirits. The two Cursed Womb Death Paintings are more similar to cursed corpses than cursed spirits. Still, they bridge the gap between human and curse, which creates a controversial discussion about empathizing with villainy that many fans are not willing to have.

4 Mahito & Junpei Push Jujutsu Kaisen Into Seinen Territory

Mahito's arc in Jujutsu Kaisen is infamously controversial among fans. While Kento Nanami managed to easily gain popularity, Mahito and Junpei brought a darker tone to the series that's seen as contentious with some fans.

Mahito and Junpei are proof of the corruption hiding within the human soul. Alhough many want to blame Mahito for Junpei's choices, those who rewatch episodes 9 through 13 will quickly realize that it was Junpei who sought out Mahito. Mahito and Junpei's arc effectively created compelling stakes in the anime, but some still prefer Gojo's lighthearted portrayal of jujutsu.

3 Yuji Gave Sukuna A Foothold In The Modern Era Of Jujutsu

Yuji Observing his Cursed Energy in Jujutsu Kaisen

Many anime protagonists readily lay down their lives for peers, allies, or even strangers and Yuji is no exception to this rule. In the very first episode, he consumes a relic of jujutsu past that contains 1/20th of the most powerful cursed spirit of all time.

Many interpret this moment as a heroic sacrifice but some fans see it as something else. Eating Sukuna's finger may have seemed heroic at the time, but in saving Megumi, Yuji gave Sukuna a foothold in the modern era of jujutsu.

2 Gege Akutami Removed Gojo From The Plot

Jujutsu Kaisen's creator, Gege Akutami, filled his series with intriguing arcs that haven't made it into anime adaptation just yet. Each of these arcs opens the door to new controversial moments, but none are quite as controversial as the moment that Gojo was removed from the plot.

During the Shibuya Incident arc, Gojo is sealed by the Prison Realm and entirely removed from the plot. Considering Gojo's rampant popularity in the first season of the anime, fans can surely imagine the controversy this caused among dedicated readers.

1 Jujutsu Kaisen's Manga Teases Nobara's Death But Doesn't Confirm It

Nobara using Hairpin Technique

Gege Akutami has stated that either Yuji, Megumi, and Gojo will perish or Nobara will take their place by the end of Jujutsu Kaisen. Even after revealing this fact to fans, there's still controversy over whether Nobara should be killed off in the manga.

During the Shibuya Incident arc, Nobara is far outmatched, but she still manages to counter Mahito's Cursed Technique before seemingly dying. It's not entirely clear whether Nobara is actually dead and fans are anxiously awaiting Akutami to confirm her fate.
