The following article contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 189, "Tokyo No. 2 Colony, Part 8" by Gege Akutami, John Werry, and Snir Aharon, available in English from Viz Media.

Just when it seemed like Kashimo had turned the tables and the fight was as good as over, Hakari somehow managed to survive. In the previous chapter, Kashimo used his electricity to take a chunk out of Hakari's lower torso. It was reminiscent of the way he destroyed Panda's entire body. It happened as soon as Hakari's round of immortality ended, so it makes perfect sense that Kashimo believed that was the end of the fight. That said, a sorcerer who Satoru Gojo claims has the potential to surpass him won't go down that easy.

The fight certainly would have ended there if Kashimo was fighting anyone else. However, Hakari was able to cast his Domain Expansion again in a last ditch effort. Kashimo is taken aback by this, but isn't worried because he assumes the chances of Hakari hitting another jackpot are slim to none. He is proven wrong as Hakari hits the jackpot for a fourth consecutive time -- including when he hit it fighting Charles previously. It becomes even clearer at this moment why Yuta believes Hakari is stronger than him when he gets fired up.

Hakari winning jackpot

Hakari's automatic Reversed Cursed Technique heals him completely, erasing any sign that he was on the cusp of death. When he removes his Domain Expansion's barrier, he and Kashimo are suddenly above the sea. Hakari shifted his barrier coordinates to transport them there. This is the first time readers are seeing a character move their Domain, but apparently it's nothing out of the ordinary, since Kashimo immediately knows what Hakari did.

Hakari's intention is to drop Kashimo into the sea, as he suspects that his Cursed Energy leak out into the water, leaving him defenseless. Hakari's suspicion turns out to be true. Since Kashimo's Cursed Energy is like electricity, once it starts discharging in water, it won't stop until it's expended. Fortunately for him, Hakari has no idea that there are huge Cursed Spirits in this sea, since they're still in the Tokyo No. 2 Colony barrier. Kashimo lands on one of these Cursed Spirits as they swim along the sea's surface and manages to stay afloat until Hakari eventually kicks him off.

Kashimo's Cursed Energy does in fact start flowing out into the water, and he starts panicking a bit. Nonetheless, he has another ace up his sleeve as he uses the sea, and the chlorine in it, to his advantage. Chlorine is the first deadly poison humankind developed for use as a chemical weapon. Kashimo uses electrolysis on the seawater to generate chlorine gas, which in turn reaches Hakari who is floating directly above the water. Hakari is knocked unconscious by the gas, and he falls into the water.

Kashimo and Hakari underwater

The use of toxins is the next best way to kill a Reverse Cursed Technique user, if destroying their brain in one blow proves to be too difficult. This is because addressing a toxin throughout the body is not as simple as mere body regeneration, since it requires locating and removing the substance. This happens as Hakari's ongoing round of immortality is about to end. Thus, Kashimo once again prematurely assumes the fight is over because he thinks Hakari can't detoxify fast enough. His assumption is proven wrong as Hakari suddenly regains consciousness underwater.

Kashimo had not realized that Hakari's Reversed Cursed Technique was fully automatic. It seems he believed that Hakari was consciously healing himself, though readers know that he's actually unable to use Reverse Cursed Technique without the jackpot bonus. Hakari attacks Kashimo while the two are underwater and the fighting continues. The chapter ends with Kashimo seemingly releasing electricity in the water, causing an explosion of gas. Hakari is visibly shocked, but with his luck it's safe to assume he'll probably be fine.
