Jujutsu Kaisen fans are rather disappointed in the choice to censor the attire of one of the anime adaptation's antagonists. Eso, one of nine death-painting Wombs, had a rather distinctive choice in fashion, sporting nothing but a thong/garter belt combination in the manga. However, MAPPA toned down this look to make it appear that Eso is wearing pants -- and some fans aren't happy.

As one Twitter user points out, the choice to censor Eso's outfit completely undermines a joke regarding his back. Eso claims that the reason for his lack of clothing is to keep the face that resides on his back from "getting stuffy." Despite this consideration for the face, he also claims that he'll kill anyone looking at it because he's self-conscious about it, which our heroes immediately do right after he says this.

Viewers have taken to social media to mourning the loss of Eso's glorious buns of steel, wondering why it's okay to show tons of gore and even depictions of self-harm, but not Eso's assets. To make the censoring even more confusing, the bulge is still visible in his new design. The show currently has a TV-MA rating, so the decision likely isn't based on age ratings. Some Redditors are speculating as to whether the new design was okayed by Gege Akutami, the creator of the manga.

While the reason for the change is a mystery, what is clear is that Jujutsu Kaisen fans feel it was unnecessary and takes away from Eso's characterization, in particular, a joke about his fashion choices. While it is risque, this is a series that doesn't air during the day on TV -- it airs at 12:25 A.M Japan time on Fridays. The amount of animated gore also solidifies that it isn't meant for younger viewers, so the addition of leggings is lost on the older ones it's targeted at. It's not uncommon for some studios to make slight alterations to a character's design to make it easier to animate, but not when it's a major part of that character's backstory or personality.

While Japan does have laws regarding obscene material, nude bottoms usually aren't included in that category. Perhaps MAPPA will make the change back to the thong for the Blu-ray and DVD release, as studios often make changes or corrections for the home release of anime. Fans can only hope at this point.
