How Cain Marko regained his powers has been one of the central mysteries of Marvel's new Juggernaut series. Those powers, which turn him into an unstoppable force, come from the Gem of Cyttorak. However, last year's Uncanny X-Men #21 by Matthew Rosenberg and Whilce Portacio, saw the X-Men's Magik (in her Darkchylde form) rip the Gem away from him and crush it. She also sent the depowered Cani Marko to Limbo. But when Marko appeared in Juggernaut #1, his powers had been restored.

Now, Juggernaut #4 finally reveals that one of Marvel’s strongest superbeings regained his power by donning a new armor forged from the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak and sniffing the Gem's dust with his nose.

In this issue, Marko is storming an old Factor-3 base while hunting the villains who manipulated Quicksand to attack him while he was on trial. In the series, Juggernaut has been on a path to redemption, attempting to rebrand himself as a hero by making amends for the crimes he committed in his decades as a villain. While he’s smashing his way into the Factor-3 base, Juggernaut has a flashback to how he got his powers back.

Cain recalls smashing into another base and fighting through an army of O.N.E. guards to retrieve the shattered pieces of the Gem of Cyttorak. He found the gem smashed into bits and pieces, and he snorted the shattered gem in order to take the power back into his body.

The Gem of Cyttorak is one of the most powerful objects in the Marvel Universe. Its power comes from its namesake, the demon Cyttorak, who was banished to the Crimson Cosmos. He gifts the gem to mortals on Earth so they’ll be his Avatar while he feeds on the destruction they cause. While there have been other Juggernauts like Colossus and the Living Monolith, Marko has by far been Cyttorak’s avatar for the longest period of time.

After that, he was transported to Cyttorak’s home, the Crimson Cosmos, where his old master rhapsodized about their reunion. But Marko wasn’t having it. Juggernaut revealed that their connection has been severed due to the harness he was wearing that was made from the bands of Cyttorak, which effectively limits the demon from accessing Earth and Marko, freeing the Juggernaut from his influence.

It’s a huge moment in Marko’s development. For most of his life, he’s served a variety of masters like Cyttorak, Black Tom Cassidy, Cul Borson and even his step-brother Charles Xavier, and others, but now he’s stepping out on his own. He doesn’t turn his back on Cyttorak just because the bonds are broken. Juggernaut makes the choice to take his fate into his own hands in a stunning development that is long overdue, and he got closer to the source of his powers than ever before in the process.
