WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Savage Avengers #14 by Gerry Duggan, Patch Zircher, Java Tartaglia, and VC’s Travis Lanham.

The incredibly powerful Juggernaut first appeared in 1965's X-Men #12 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. In that issue Cain Marko barrels through the X-Men’s defenses before pounding down a metal door to get to his stepbrother, Professor Charles Xavier. Marko is a normal human who found the Gem of Cyttorak in a temple and read aloud the description, “Whosoever touches this gem shall be granted the power of the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak! Henceforth, you who read these words, shall become...forevermore...a human juggernaut!” The Gem made Marko virtually unstoppable once he starts moving. He’s spent time as a villain, fighting against the X-Men, Spider-Man, and other heroes, but he’s also been a hero, joining his brother’s X-Men at one time.

He joins up with heroes again when Magik and Conan of Cimmeria offer him a bag full of jewels in the latest issue of Savage Avengers. After they make a brief detour to pick up Black Knight, they take on a Sadurang, the Asgardian dragon that’s been vaporizing civilians in Bruges. While Conan and the Black Knight distract Sadurang, Juggernaut gets a running start. Magik opens a portal, teleporting Marko high in the sky above Sadurang. Gravity takes over from there as he clobbers the dragon. He knocks out Sadurang--who remarks, “Not even Thor himself strikes as hard…”--in one punch.

Savage Avengers Juggernaut

It’s not the first time Professor X’s behemoth stepbrother has impressed with his strength. In this year's Juggernaut #2 by Fabian Nicieza and Ron Garney, Marko went toe to toe with the Hulk. While the Hulk did turn out to be stronger than Juggernaut, Marko was still powerful enough to stay in the fight and take advantage of a distraction by his young mutant friend D-Cell to win.

Because he’s physically unstoppable, the X-Men's usual tactic is to remove Juggernaut’s helmet, which protects him from psychic attacks, then let Professor X or another psychic attack his mind. Spider-Man has to get a bit more creative in 1982's Amazing Spider-Man #230 by Roger Stern and John Romita Jr. Peter Parker famously defeats Marko by covering his eyes and tricking him into walking into the wet concrete of a new building’s foundation.

Juggernaut came close to the pinnacle of his strength during Fear Itself #2 by Matt Fraction and Stuart Immonen when he combined the power of Cyttorak with one of the seven Hammers of the Worthy, becoming Kuurth, Breaker of Stone. The X-Men can’t physically beat him with his combined power, but Magik convinced Cyttorak to take back the power he granted Juggernaut, giving it instead of Colossus.

Juggernaut’s power ascended to an even higher level during the Trion saga. In that story, cultists steal the Gem of Cyttorak. When Marko recovers it, Cyttorak’s rival Trion gives power to Marko as well. At his strongest point, Juggernaut became a cosmic entity, “so powerful that his punches could break through the barriers that separate dimensions.” While it didn’t last forever, it was the high-power mark for Marko.

There’s no doubt that knocking out Sadurang in one punch is an impressive feat of strength. It might not measure up with becoming Kuurth, Breaker of Stone, or taking on the power of Trion, but it’s certainly another high point for Cyttorak’s champion.
