The following contains major spoilers for A.X.E.: Judgment Day #2, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Marvel's latest event A.X.E Judgment Day, pits the X-Men and The Avengers against The Eternals. But as the most recent issue shows, the fallout of that battle creates an adversary bigger than all of them. A.X.E Judgment Day #2 (by Kieron Gillen, Valerio Schiti, Marte Gracia, and VC's Clayton Cowles) reveals that the greatest danger comes not from the Eternals, but from The Progenitor, a Celestial resurrected by The Avengers, who will judge all of humanity and sentence them accordingly. Despite these apocalyptic odds and unprecedented events, the future of the X-Men has already been revealed, thanks to Destiny.
In Immortal X-Men #3 (by Kieron Gillen, Lucas Weneck, Dijjo Lima, and VC's Clayton Cowles), released two months before A.X.E Judgment Day began, Destiny had a vision. All possible futures for the X-Men opened up to her, and she saw where each branch would lead. Of the many futures in her vision, however, there were only four that branched off from the events of Judgment Day. Although all that was revealed of these futures was their names, the issue left other hints as to what fate will befall the X-Men.
The Coming of The Nimrod Extinction Event
The first future that could result from Judgment Day is labeled the "Nimrod Extinction Event". This is a multitude of futures in which the X-Men and Avengers lose, The Progenitor likely either judges the Earth to be unworthy or Nimrod and Orchis destroy mutantkind permanently. While certainly not an impossible scenario, it seems an unlikely one. With everyone from Destiny herself to Mr. Sinister and Iron Man working against it, complete extinction won't be coming for the X-Men anytime soon.
This isn't the only future Destiny sees with extinction in it though. Paths throughout her vision end in mass death for mutantkind. Although it's not something they're likely to face following Judgment Day, it's presence throughout the branching timelines is a solemn reminder of how precarious the mutants' existence is. It's also proof of how much of an anomaly their peaceful time in Krakoa has been.
The Rise of New Krakoa
On the opposite end of the spectrum from the Nimrod Extinction Event is New Krakoa. No definite details are given about this future, but it seems to be one in which Charles Xavier's dream of a safe-haven for mutants survives. Unfortunately for Professor X, it looks like the Krakoa that emerges from the wreckage of Judgment Day might not be the one he strove to create. Elsewhere in Immortal X-Men #3, snippets of Destiny's visions are shown. Of these, only one could possibly be New Krakoa: A towering stronghold dominating the island, topped by an enormous statue of Magneto.
Magneto recently barely survived the Eternals attack on Arrako, having watched most of the mutants on the planet die. This could easily be enough to put the already brutal mutant on the warpath. While seeking revenge on the Eternals will surely be his first mission, ensuring that a massacre can't happen again will be his second. Fortifying and militarizing Krakoa could easily be his next step.
The Tragedy of The Broken Sword
The image that reveals the face of New Krakoa also shows an alternate fate for the X-Men. Illyana Rasputina, stands atop a pile of corpses, her soulsword blazing. Among the dead are Cyclops, Rogue, and Wolverine. This is the future called "The Broken Sword". Although she has struggled in the past, Illyana has been a key player on the side of the mutants since her resurrection. She was chosen by the Quiet Council as one of Krakoa's Great Captains, and was recently made a member of the X-Men at this year's Hellfire Gala. All this seems to show that her dark past is behind her, but a recent trip to Limbo brought it back to the forefront.
In New Mutants #25 (by Vita Ayala, Jan Duursema, Rod Reis, Ruth Redmond, and VC’s Travis Lanham), Illyana heads back to Limbo, with the intention of passing her crown to Madelyn Pryor. There she battled her old foe, the demon S'ym, who was working for a shadowy figure. S'ym broke her soulsword and prevented her from escaping Limbo. Magik's journey to fix her weapon and return home became a psychic journey through her past as a prisoner of the evil Belasco. In the past Belasco's influence, either through manipulation or sorcery, has caused Magik to turn to the dark, and it looks like The Broken Sword is a future where this history repeats itself. Destiny has several good reasons to attempt to avoid this future at all costs.
To begin with, one of the victims of Magik's rampage was her adopted daughter, Rogue. Already resigned to Mystique's death in all of these futures, Destiny will do anything to protect the only family she has left. Another good reason is that this future is no future at all. Like the other potential outcomes discussed so far, the Broken Sword timeline simply ends. There are no further branches to explore. As Destiny herself puts it "A dramatic nexus, then blackness". In her quest to navigate these timelines, avoiding this blackness is paramount. There is more than one mutant, however, with an interest in preventing this timeline, so help may come from an unexpected source.
Sinister's Reign in The Empire of the Red Diamond
Of all the timelines branching out from Judgment Day, The Empire of the Red Diamond is the only one with a future, the only one that doesn't lead to a dead end. Here, Mr. Sinister has won. The X-Men are shown wearing his Red Diamond insignia on their chests and heads, while Essex himself sits on a crystaline throne. Elsewhere in Immortal X-Men #3, Destiny's visions reveal just how far Sinister is willing to go.
An alternate, now defunct future called "The Expanse" shows Essex traveling through space in a ship made from the cloned flesh of Sebastian Shaw. While Sinister may not know of these dark futures yet, he certainly has the power to bring them about. With clones of Moira MacTaggart in his possession, any timeline that doesn't fit with the geneticist's plans can be ended immediately, and he can try a different path. If Destiny, armed with her knowledge of the future, decides to help him down this road, no one will be able to stop them.
