Jude Law's Captain Marvel Role May Have Been Revealed

Jude Law in Captain Marvel

Jude Law's mysterious role in Captain Marvel may finally been revealed through a merchandising leak, but it's not the character most fans likely expected.

Although speculation had long centered on Law playing Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel from the comics, a leaked image from Funko's upcoming Captain Marvel Pop! series seems to indicate his character is the Kree military commander Yon-Rogg. CBR previously theorized that's indeed who Law portrays in the Marvel Studios film.

The Funko toy lineup clearly shows two important members of the Kree armada: Brie Larson's Carol Danvers and what looks to be Law's Yon-Rogg, as he's the only other prominent Starforce member in the film. That would perfectly tie in to the promotional image of Law as a Starforce commander working with Lee Pace's Ronan the Accuser, as both conspired in the comics to overthrow the Supreme Intelligence and take Kree throne. Apart from Yon-Rogg's traitorous ways, he repeatedly tried to kill Carol in the comics.

He was also the villain of the Kelly Sue DeConnick and Dexter Soy comics arc in which Carol traded her Ms. Marvel moniker for Captain Marvel. It was a transformative storyline in which Carol also adopted the red-and-blue costume she wears in the film. As the film is confirmed as heavily influenced by that run, it makes sense for Yon-Rogg to be a foil for Carol, although it remains to be seen whether he starts off as an ally and descends into villainy, or if he was an antagonist in disguise all along.

The film arrives March 8, 2019.
