HBO describes The Nevers as "an epic science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women, known as 'The Touched,' who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that could change the world." This gang will be lead by Amalia True, played by Outlander star Laura Donnelly. Characterized as "the most reckless, impulsive, emotionally damaged hero of her time" Amalia will appear opposite Declan Orrun (played by Nick Frost) as her antagonist and possible love-interest.

The former Buffy the Vampire Slayer showrunner is no stranger to strong female heroes and gained a cult following for both Buffy and Firefly, so The Nevers has big shoes to fill.

Whedon also has a solid track record when it comes to modern sci-fi, as he directed The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. To round out his cast, he has also slated Denis O'Hare, Anne Skelly, Zachary Momoh, Tom Riley and James Norton.
