Joss Whedon Promises Avengers Won’t Be ‘Obnoxiously 3D’

You can add another name to the list of blockbuster flicks shot in 2D and converted in post-production to 3D now that Disney announced Joss Whedon’s Avengers will join the ranks of movies like Star Trek 2. JoBlo chatted with Whedon about the process, which the director said he knew about from the very beginning and thought of “every second” of filming adding, “The Avengers isn’t obnoxiously 3D.”

“There’s no, ‘Oh, look, we’re going to spend 20 minutes going through this tunnel because it’s in 3D!'” he said. “And no one is pointing at the screen the entire time. But it’s an action movie. Things tend to hurtle toward the screen anyway. I’m not a big fan of extreme long-lens, talky movies — I like to see the space I’m in and relate to it, so 3D kinda fits my aesthetic anyway. And the technology has advanced so far in the past couple years.”

Considering Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger were converted in post-production, it should come as no surprised that Marvel and Disney decided to go the same way with The Avengers.

Opening May 4, the film stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill and Stellan Skarsgård as Dr. Selvig.
